Cause I Can Sleep Just Fine When You Hold Me

Cause I Can Sleep Just Fine When You Hold Me
Good to see some friends last night at Twist. Special thanks to Eagle Rock Bowling & Drinking Club, All Star Lanes, CGT, and all the bands for putting together such a great night and of course Mary Monolator for the phat snacks. Photos up.

F Yeah Fest isn't just a festival. It's an exercise in patience and benevolence. We all know it isn't very organized. We all know we won't probably be able to get in to see the bands we want to see. We all know that there will probably be more than a few fights. We all know everyone will end up hating everyone at the end. And we all know that we will be so sick of Tijuana dogs that the very faintest scent of strange meat wrapped in bacon will make us vomit. We totally understand and we feel your pain.

Tonight, Meho Plaza perform on "Demolisten" and Joel from Dios (Malos) will be a guest for the whole month of September in conjunction of their residency at Spaceland. Also tonight, big David Bowie tribute at Will Greer. Monsters Are Waiting celebrates the release of their new EP Ones and Zeros at the Getty before Ms. Ferry goes on m-leave. Meiko, Joe Purdy, Chris Seefried, and Jay Nash at the Roxy. Gaby Moreno celebrates the release of her lovely debut album Still the Unknown. Mere Mortals, LSD and the Search for God, and Useless Keys at Spaceland. Rainbow Arabia and others at 6th St. Black Kites, Ladies and Gents, and The Hectors at at Echo Curio. Letting Up Despite Great Faults, Marvelous Toy, and others at pehrspace. The Western Conference at Echoplex. And the one and only John Williams conducts his annual weekend spotlight at the Bowl... Saturday, those not F Yeah-ing it might enjoy the Long Beach Blues Festival with Chuck Berry, John Mayall, Sly & the Family Stone, and many others. Also, Ovrcast celebrates 3 years of destroying our ability to hear at Mountain Bar with Cattle Decapitation, Captain Ahab and others. Divisadero, Fort King and others open for Silver Summit. Pedestrian, Holly Conlan, Mandy Moore, and others at the Hotel Cafe. The Secret 6, Forcefield ON, and others at The Prospector. Joe Purdy, Meiko, Chris Seefried, and Jay Nash down at Saint Rocke... On Sunday, Obi Best residency wraps up an amazing month with our friends Alex & Sam and I Make This Sound. What Job? at the Vermont House. Gangi and Winter Flowers open for Silver Summit at Tangier. We're also do that Nike Human Race downtown.

Los Angeles Loves to... Rock with a Twist IV

Los Angeles Loves to... Rock with a Twist
As we type this, Mary Monolator is probably hovering over her little antique oven -- preheated at a gentle 350° -- patiently waiting for the next batch of lovelies to come out to be lightly salted and then carefully placed with dozens of their closest friends for safe keeping. In a few nights, they will be the guest of honor at a table fit for a king.

There are few nights that we take part in that has as much down home feel as "Rock with a Twist". You get some friends, some drinks, some snacks, and some music and what you have there is a good night in Los Angeles. It's really our only chance to catch up with the people that we adore, which is you Los Angeles, so we really hope you can make it.

This Twist lineup is quite obviously fantastic. I Make This Sound, Shiloe, and The Health Club are three of L.A.'s most beloved bands. And when you add The Monolators you know this is going to be legendary.

Los Angeles Needs... A Monday Update

Los Angeles Needs... A Monday Update
Good crowd on Friday at the Echoplex for the Beachwood Sparks show with Mia Doi Todd, The Tyde, The Movies, Winter Flowers, Blank Blue and others. Sad we had to leave a bit early but we finally hit the wall after nearly four straight days awake working on a project. Did see a friend or two at Taco Zone later on though... Despite some serious Sunday competition, Obi Best drew a big crowd to Tangier for the second-to-last night of their residency. Be sure to pick up an advanced copy of their upcoming album Capades only available at shows or through their website. Ask anyone who's already got it and they'll proclaim it to be one of the best albums of the year. Juliette Commagere also debuted her new solo effort last night, complete with a brass quartet, a string quartet, and of course Joachim Cooder et al. Look for their debut album Queens Die Proudly in October. Watchers are watching both of these bands very closely...

Last of the Monday residencies tonight. We couldn't be more obsessed with two bands than we are with Warpaint and Love Grenades who both drew huge crowds this month to Spaceland and the Silverlake Lounge, respectively. Elsewhere tonight, Foot Village and others at pehrspace. Io Perry, Seasons, and Ollin at The Echo. Jesca Hoop and Emily Wells open for Lykke Li at the Hotel Cafe. And of course emo goth metal band Radiohead have a little show at the Bowl... Tuesday, Delta Spirit celebrates the Rounder re-release of their debut album Ode to Sunshine at Spaceland. Golden Animals and Shirley Rolls open for The Donkeys. Hecuba, Lucky Dragons, Bad Dudes, LACO$TE and others at The Smell... Wednesday, edIT and Lazer Sword at Low End Theory. Amateurs, Clevis and others at Echo Curio... Thursday, get ready for another "Rock with a Twist" at All Star Lanes. Also, Satisfaction, The Flying Tourbillon Orchestra, and Hello Dragon at Safari Sam's. Chester French, Rumspringa, Silver Ghost, and Saint Motel at Spaceland. Matthew Sweet and Greg Laswell at The Echo. The Antarcticans, The Black Pine, and The Fling at The Prospector. Joshua Radin, Erin McCarley, and Hana Pestle at the House of Blues.

Just Tried to Let You Know That I Love You So and Now I'll Let You Go

Just Tried to Let You Know That I Love You So and Now I'll Let You Go
It's the beginning of the end this weekend. The end of hot summer nights. The end of sitting at home watching delayed broadcasts of people running, swimming, and gymnasticizing. And the beginning of the end to August...

This year's Sunset Junction should be fun, not necessarily for the festival's official attractions (which are perfectly adequate) but for all the sideshow unofficial events happening in conjunction with the Junction.

If you're like us and hate big crowds, however, there's still plenty of stuff to do this weekend away from that part of Sunset. Tune into "Demolisten" tonight for which will probably be the first of many in-studio performances for Avi Buffalo. Beachwood Sparks make their triumphant return to an L.A. stage after nearly half a decade with a show at Echoplex with the ginormous lineup of The Tyde, The Movies, Mia Doi Todd, Blank Blue and others. Ima Robot opens for the one and only Cafe Tacuba at the Greek. Veruca Salt and Tsar (where the heck have you been?) at Viper. Red Maids, Mad Gregs, and Liz Pappademas at Echo Curio. Aushua, The Brobecks, and others at the Roxy. Sabrosa Purr, Shiloe, Happy Dwarf and others at Mr. T's Bowl. Tandemoro, The Hectors, Thailand, and Kissing Cousins at pehrspace. And Brion/Palmer at g'Net... Phew. Saturday, our old friends Dakah perform at California Plaza. Another old friend, Sylvie Lewis opens two nights for Sondre Lerche at the Troubadour. The Germs, The Mae Shi, and Spider Problem at The Echo. The Relationship and Pedestrian at Molly Malone's. The Ditty Bops at g'Net. El Vez at the Key Club... Sunday, Obi Best continues their Tangier residency. New buzz band Radiohead begin two nights at the Bowl with Liars. And a few post-Junction parties at the Echo/Echoplex with a bunch of famous DJs.

Ima Robot - "Hello I Love You" (MP3)
Thailand - "Valley Vista" (MP3)

Los Angeles Needs... A Wednesday Update

Los Angeles Needs... A Wednesday Update
Congrats are in order to Le Switch on the release of their new album, due 9/30 on Autumn Tone. And to "Let's Independent" on two years of hosting great shows.

Other news: Videothing posted their video of our May "First Fridays" show with The Underground Railroad to Candyland, Pizza!, and The Monolators... TATE has a nice interview and live video at LiveDaily Sessions... Hotel Cafe Tour fall edition kicks off in October with Rachael Yamagata, Ingrid Michaelson, Priscilla Ahn, Meiko, Catherine Feeny, Lenka, Kate Havnevik, Thao Nguyen, Emily Wells, Jaymay, Brooke Fraser, Samantha Crain, Erin McCarley, Katie Herzig, Jenny Owen Youngs, Anya Marina, and Holly Conlan. The tour concludes in Los Angeles at the Music Box on 11/18. Presale tix now available... Everest will be heading out on a fall tour opening for Neil Young and Death Cab For Cutie, stopping in L.A. at the Forum on 10/30. Before that, the band will head out on a quick West Coast tour with The Parson Red Heads... HEALTH opens for Of Montreal at the Hollywood Palladium on 11/22... Everybody Else is set to head out on tour with Hanson in September toting with them their new acoustic album and EP... Pop Noir has replaced Casxio in tonight's lineup at Moscow, which is happening at Safari Sam's and not Boardner's (just for tonight's show)... Red Bull Batalla de los Gallos Los Angeles qualifiers is 8/22 at 740. Winner of the Latin hip-hop MC battle event will compete in the finals, which will be held 10/3 at the Pico Rivera Sports Arena... Out of all the widespread talent in Los Angeles, Rolling Stone picked up Low vs. Diamond as one of their "Artists to Watch for 2008". Interesting. Other artists include Lykke Li, Ra Ra Riot, Laura Izibor, 3OH!3, and Dead Confederate. Incidentally, we traveled to see Laura Izibor showcase in London a few years ago (with a then more stable Amy Winehouse) and after listening to recent recordings and seeing her showcase in town recently it seems she's been over-A&R'd to the point of losing all the originality and feel she once had. Too bad... Kanye West is confirmed to play L.A.'s chapter of Nike's Human Race, a global community event bringing 25 cities together in a synchronized 10k run. We'll be participating in the run -- completely decked out in Adidas of course... They were probably listening to Good Charlotte so it's justified.

Los Angeles Needs... A Monday Update

Los Angeles Needs... A Monday Update
We might have underestimated Friday's show at Mr. T's Bowl just a touch. What a night. Congrats to The Mormons on their 10th year of being one of L.A.'s best punk bands as well as remaining true to the scene since the very beginning. The new band and new songs sounded great and we very much look forward to the next mobile unit show crash. And farewell to 8-bit who played their final show in front of hundreds of their most hardcore fans (seen above). Banned from almost every club in town at some point in their career, they brought it back home to T's for one last hurrah. The group also performed live on "Demolisten" on Friday and if you missed it you really need to watch that hilarious shit... Also, another sad farewell to Cafe Mariposa which held its last show on Saturday with Seasons and others... On a much happier note, welcome home (sort of) to Catherine Feeny who played her first show in Los Angeles on Saturday since moving back to the U.S. It had been roughly six years since we last saw a full set from the former Angeleno. She's now living up in Portland after spending the last few years in England gaining wonderful success with her debut album... Saturday, was also the launch party of a new warehouse art/performance space called BOXeight. Lots of people were out for this and hopefully this means more shows out of the conventional club scene. By the way, we just missed that huge intersection crash on Central on the way there. Hopefully no one got hurt... Finally, Otik Records presented a wonderful showcase last night with HoneyHoney, The Sweet Hurt, The Mind Blasters, and Liz Pappademas. Otik has been putting on these bi-weekly nights for a few months giving the South Bay a chance to see some of L.A.'s best bands. Had to leave a bit early to check out some stuff down in the LBC for a band who canceled their Saturday show last minute on us. You know who you are...

We'll be out to see the Monday residencies tonight again (they're soo good this month)... On Tuesday, Le Switch celebrates the release of their new album And Now... Le Switch at The Echo with The World Record, Les Blanks, and Nico Stai. "Let's Independent" celebrates its 2nd anniversary at Boardner's with Xu Xu Fang, The Savages, and Death to Anders... On Wednesday, Black Francis and The Blood Arm at Spaceland. Hell Ya! presents Twilight Sleep, ExitMusic, and Avi Buffalo at The Echo. Classical Geek Theatre presents The Mae Shi, Pizza! and others at Echo Curio. Quetzal at the Knitting Factory. Love Grenades, Casxio and others at Moscow... Thursday, A-Trak, Diabetic, DJ PUBE$ at La Cita. Io Echo, The Oohlas, and others at the Silverlake Lounge. Miranda Lee Richards, Magic Mirror, and Line and Circle at Spaceland. The Sweet Hurt, Reader, and The Hard to Get at All Star Lanes. The Watkins Family Hour at g'Net. And The Soft Hands and others at The Prospector.

Count Your Casualties So Clever, Nothing Stays Buried Forever

Count Your Casualities So Clever, Nothing Stays Buried Forever
What a thoroughly enjoyable week. Congrats to Inara George on the release of her new lovely album. Be sure to pick up a copy at your local retailer... Indian Jewelry, Hecuba, and We Are the World blew us away on Monday. Thanks to Club Donuts! for putting on such a great party and of course for all the sweet donuts. L.A. Record did a proper review... Stopped by four phenomenal shows downtown on Wednesday with Boom Bip at La Cita; Army Navy/Miniature Tigers/Eastern Conference Champions at Redwood; Evangelista playing a last-minute warm-up show at The Smell; and The Polyamorous Affair and Odd Modern at The Bordello. Thanks to all the bands for all playing conveniently within walking distance, on the same street no less. Some pics up yo.

Tonight, tune into "Demolisten" to hear 8-bit crunk it up and then later head out to Mr. T's Bowl for The Mormons 10th Anniversary show. This show will be bringing HLP's elite out of hibernation and we predict absolute effing chaos. Elsewhere, My Ruin celebrates the release of their new album Throat Full Of Heart at the Whisky. The Starlite Desperation celebrates the release of their new album Take It Personally at the Redwood. Flying Lotus signs autogaphs at Amoeba. Benji Hughes begins two nights at El Cid. Spindrift, Crooked Cowboy, and the Duchess and the Duke at Spaceland. Pop Levi and The Parson Red Heads at The Echo. Shiloe and others at pehrspace. Hearts of Palm UK, Fascinoma, and others at Echo Curio. Jon Brion/Dave Palmer at g'Net. Greg Laswell residency at the Hotel Cafe. And Haim with friends at The Smell... Saturday is a busy one: Natasha Shneider benefit commemoration with QOTSA, PJ Harvey, and many others at the Music Box. Blow Up LA celebrates two years at 613. Punk jazz legends Saccharine Trust at McCabe's. Katy Perry and The Airborne Toxic Event at Six Flags. Catherine Feeny, Blondfire, and others at the Hotel Cafe. Heather Reid at g'Net. Kim Fowley's "Hollywood Sexual Underground" at the Redwood. The Muslims, Pizza!, Gangi, and Amanda Jo Williams at Spaceland. Jesus Makes the Shotgun Sound, ExitMusic, VOICEsVOICEs, and Ars Poetria at L'Keg. Not to mention the return of Jujubeats, whose name alone should be making old school ravers pee in their pants. Also, one of L.A's best annual week-long festivals Nisei Week kicks off... On Sunday, Obi Best continues their Tangier residency. HoneyHoney, The Sweet Hurt, Liz Pappademas, and The Mind Blasters at Saint Rocke. Jesus Makes the Shotgun Sound, ExitMusic and Dietra Kruschev at Que Sera. And Suki Ewers celebrates the release of her new album Kind of Hazy at PTP.

Raise your hand if you've cried at least once during these Olympics. Damn you absurdly athletic people. And will someone let us know when the Phelps or Shawn Johnson Wheaties box comes out? Seriously.

Spindrift - "The New West" (MP3)

Los Angeles Needs... A Wednesday Update

Los Angeles Needs... A Wednesday Update
Good to see so many friends come out last Friday for Ms. Mancha's 18th birthday (semicolon close parentheses) extravaganza. All the bands were fantastic. Thanks to The Karabal Nightlife for inviting us to be apart of it and for being such kind hosts. Also, congrats to Ema and the Ghosts on the release of her new debut EP and for being the only artist to ever deny us from buying bulk quantities of anything. Very humbling indeed. Photos from the show should be posted by now.

We highly recommend checking out Stella Im Hultberg's new solo exhibit "Raveled", which opened last Friday at thinkspace. Unfortunately, everything's pretty much sold including all the 6X8 graphite/ink washes pieces we were fully prepared to purchase (for a very reasonable $1100 each). A few photos from the opening are up (sorry, we were lazy on Friday). The exhibit ends on 9/5.

Lots of shows going on the next few days. Busdriver and Free Moral Agents headline Low End Theory tonight. Also tonight, Qui, Halloween Swim Team, and Upsilon Acrux open for The Locust at The Echo. The Polyamorous Affair and Odd Modern at The Bordello. Idyllists, Wallpaper, and Castaneda at Moscow. Odessa Chen, Nicole Simone, and Rachel Cantu at Tangier. Low vs Diamond celebrates the release of their new, self-titled album at the Troubadour. And the Downtown Film Festival kicks off tonight with an opening night gala at the Orpheum... On Thursday, Chester French plays Spaceland. Daniel Ahearn, Liz Pappademas and others at Tangier. David Garza at g'Net. Juana Molina and others at the Twilight Dance series. Repeater, Greater California and others at Alex's Bar. And Evangelista opens for Xiu Xiu at Echoplex.

In other News: Our old friends Ozomatli will now be hosting Star 98.7's weekday morning show after a successful run as hosts of their Saturday local show "OZO Local"... The Pretenders secret thing last Monday was will be posted on Yahoo! Music on 10/1. They debuted songs from their forthcoming country album Break Up the Concrete due 10/6 on Bing's Shangri-La Music (The Duke Spirit)... Care to comment on this commentary by some TATER haters?

Hot Lights on Your Love Life, Let Me Buy

Hot Lights on Your Love Life, Let Me Buy
Congrats to The Airborne Toxic Event and Darker My Love on their successful release shows yesterday. Be sure to pick up their respective albums out now in stores everywhere. Also, thanks to Whispertown 2000 for the heads up on the Conor Oberst/Jenny Lewis secret show earlier this week.

08/08/08... Tonight, we've got a show at pehrspace we hope you can check out but there's also an awesome lineup at CIA with Wait Think Fast, Kissing Cousins, Shiloe and Sky Parade. Moreover, Káren Tatoyan has a big gathering of friends at Spaceland with Rocco Deluca and the Burden, Sarah Negahdari and the Sad Solids, and Learning Music. Redcar, The Ivy Walls, and others at Tangier. "88BoaDrum" at La Brea Tar Pits. Paris Loves L.A. and Joel Virgil at Tangier. Abe Vigoda opens up for The Faint at the Music Box. Pop Levi at The Echo. Dave Palmer/Jon Brion at g'Net. And Stella Im Hultberg's "Raveled" opening at thinkspace. Also be sure to listen to "Demolisten" for SF's Pinched Nerve and NY's Paleface... Saturday is probably the busiest day of the month. First, the "Highland Park Summer Festival" features Le Switch, Seasons, Ninja Academy, The Health Club, Odd Modern, The Hectors, and many others. Castledoor heads down to Long Beach to celebrate their EP release show at {open} with Agent Ribbons. Earlimart, The Parson Red Heads, and The Henry Clay People down at Detroit Bar. B-Side Players and Ceci Bastida at the Roxy. Gliss at Boardner's. Jill Sobule at g'net. Solare at La Cave. The Meeting Places, Magic Lantern, and Hypatia Lake at The Prospector. Amateurs at The Cocaine. And of course "Rock the Bells" and "The Love Festival"... And Sunday, A Fine Frenzy, Mozella, and many others at the Ford. Dave Insley, Dead Rock West, and others at Grand Ole Echo. Indian Jewelry and WEAVE! at PTP. Foot Village and David Scott Stone open for xbxrx. And the Obi Best residency at Tangier.

So much to do that we hardly mentioned any touring bands coming to town -- although this should serve as a pretty good taste of who to see this weekend...

Los Angeles Loves to... Party at pehrspace

Los Angeles Loves to... Party at pehrspace
It's no secret that we at la-underground are some of the most boring individuals on the planet so our party-throwing abilities are nothing short of pathetic. Leave it to The Karabal Nightlife, whose knack for onstage frolic is as known to locals as their brilliant T.Rex meets Dinosaur Jr. sound, to start this party right. And any band named after a line in one of the most underrated movies of all time must know how to party, yes?

Karabal's bassist Lindsay Mancha will be celebrating a birthday and the band has invited a circus troupe of band friends to round out the night including Shirley Rolls (featuring members The Monolators, I Make This Sound, The Voyeurs, and a special guest or two), Queen Kwong, Ema and the Ghosts (celebrating the release of her debut EP), and The Digs. The night is being co-presented by Psychedelic L.A. Underground Online Magazine who have a much more interesting post about the night's show. This is going to be too fun so we hope you can make it -- please don't make us send you an Evite to beg you.

Los Angeles Needs... A Wednesday Update

Los Angeles Needs... A Wednesday Update
Congrats to Sean Carnage for three years of utter greatness. What a show on Monday. He's had some of our favorite bands play his nights over the past few years, but truly the best part of a Sean Carnage evening is the uninhibited, girl-on-boy/girl-on-girl/boy-on-boy/boy-on-piñata free-for-all art of dancing. So while other clubs on Monday are winding down with patrons yawning at the midnight hour, pehrspace is still filled with youngsters raving until 2am to 90's dance idols La Bouche, 2 Unlimited, and Amber (like the picture above). Even the occasional Silver Lake straight-arrow hipster will wander in and feel compelled to grind to those cheesy 90's happy hardcore hits that DJ Kyle H. Mabson unleashes. They can't help it. It's the Carnage effect. LA Weekly did a write-up. And we posted some photos.

We also stopped by the Silverlake Lounge and Spaceland on Monday. Huge, great crowds at both venues. Expect even bigger crowds for the lineups ahead.

We'll be stopping by the The Blood Arm and The Muslims' show tonight at The Echo to do the hand jive, the mashed potato, and some other moves we've been practicing for the last couple of weeks in prep for this show.

In other news: Weezer recently announced their tour with Angels and Airwaves and Tokyo Police Club. The tour hits Los Angeles on 10/14 at The Forum... We forgot to mention in that last Monday update thing that My Ruin is also celebrating the release of their new album/DVD Throat Full Of Heart on 8/15 at the Whisky... The Pretenders are doing a Yahoo! sponsored secret show on Monday (8/11) as part of the Nissan Live Sets series. First 200 emailers get in.

We Love the All the All of You Where Lands Are Green and Skies Are Blue

Did everyone enjoy Motley Crüe day yesterday? We sure did. In honor of the Crüe we went out and got wasted on vodka, freebased some cocaine, and then wandered into Glendale thinking Colorado Blvd. was Sunset Blvd. and The Scene was the Rainbow only to see our friends Castledoor and The Flying Tourbillon Orchestra playing. Yeah, crazy right? In the audience: Members of Amnion, Dead Rock West, Death to Anders, The Monolators, The Henry Clay People, Le Switch, Culture Club, Lamb of God, Vixen, Einstuerzende Neubauten, and others... Also, congrats to Hello Dragon on the release of their new album, now available at your fine online retailer. Go buy it.

Peanut Butter Wolf one-up's his two previous "PBW vs. L.A." weeks by performing eight different styles (music video set) at eight different clubs on eight consecutive nights, beginning tonight at Grand Star and ending 08/08/08 at some private party. More details by calling 1-(888)-WOLF4LA or go here.

The Blank Tapes and Featherbeard on Demolisten tonight. The Monolators will also be in studio to preview tracks from their forthcoming new album. Also tonight, we must remember to catch The Airborne Toxic Event on Conan O'Brien just to see the post-"great show" handshake they'll be doing. We have bets on who Conan will shake hands with first. Earlier this evening, be sure to check out "First Fridays" at Mr. T's Bowl with Seasons, boxViolet, and others. Elsewhere, Spacehog opens for The Subways at the Troubadour. Pop Levi opens for Friendly Fires. Z-Trip and Friends at the Echoplex. Aushua, White Arrows, Love Lies Sleeping, and others at Spaceland (followed by a TATE viewing party). Upsilon Acrux and others at Cafe Mariposa. And Sneaker Pimps have a big party thing at Crash Mansion with Public Enemy, Ghostface Killah, and others... Saturday, Dengue Fever plays the El Rey with Afternoons and others. Run Run Run, The Coral Sea, and Voyager One at Spaceland. Rocco Deluca, HoneyHoney, Caitlin Crosby and others at the Hotel Cafe. And Hive's August Group art show... Sunday, Obi Best begins their Sunday residency at Tangier. Wires on Fire and Rumspringa at The Echo. The Health Club, Dirt Dress, and others at Mr. T's Bowl. Blank Blue and others at The Prospector. And ExitMusic, The Terrapin, and others down at Saint Rocke.
