But If You Should Fall on Your Way, Then I will Carry You That Day

But If You Should Fall on Your Way, Then I will Carry You That Day
Went to a lot of stuff last night, but we made it a point to stop by the "3G" lineup of Gowns, Ghost to Falco, and Gamble House at Echo Curio. Echo Curio, by the way, had some of the most impressive lineups of the entire month in February. We didn't even really mention the Devin Sarno show last weekend, but his fifteen minute set was a thing of beauty. That may have been a bit short for most, but for longtime Crib fans we know any time on stage is a rarity so we'll take what we can get. The show last night was also quite good. We've been waiting for Ghost to Falco's return to L.A. for a little while now. We heard about them by way of the late great Portland band Alarmist in which GTF lead singer Eric Crespo used to play in. We found it a bit ironic while we were watching them that David Pajo was playing a few miles away at The Bordello when the band they often compared to the most is Slint. In any case, for a band that sounds this good and having been around since 2003, it was a bit surprising that the show wasn't very crowded (although we weren't complaining). They have a show tonight at the ever-wonderful Ports O Call Bedroom with Voice on Tape and tomorrow at the Grind in Riverside with Jesus Makes the Shotgun Sound. Also, Gowns (pictured above) were great as always. Ezra Buchla is a mad music genius (who played in Monstro for our show last week) and Ms. Erika is such a rock goddess and she doesn't even know it.

Should be a fun weekend... Tonight, listen up for The Press Fire! on "Demolisten." After which, head on over to Home for another dose of Inara George and Greg Kurstin's "Gimme a Steak" soiree featuring very special guests doing classic jazz standards. The special guests last time included Maria Taylor, Juliette Commagere, Becky Stark, Eleni Mandell, Blake Sennett, Alex Lilly, Samantha Sidley, and many other famous folks so we can only imagine what they have in store for us tonight (fingers crossed for Lars Ulrich doing "Girl From Ipanema"). Elsewhere, Kool Keith hangs out at the El Rey. The Movies, One Trick Pony, and Death to Anders at Ground Zero (USC). Everest, The Parson Red Heads, and Two Sheds at The Echo. Mike Watt & the Secondmen and others at Spaceland. NASA Space Universe, Moment Trigger, The Amazements and others at The Smell. Dot Hacker, Imaad Wasif, Next of Kin, and others at El Cid. Dorian Wood, Red Maids, and Marshweed at pehrspace. Mad Gregs, Monstro, and others at Echo Curio. Seasons, Soul or System, and Random Patterns at the Unknown Theater. Thee Makeout Party!, Devon Williams, Audacity, and NON+ at Synchronicity. Angie Evans, Lex Land and others at The Mint. Danceism at Lot 613. And don't forget to stop by Where for "Exposure"...

Saturday, Jim White and John Doe at g'net. Pizza!, Fol Chen and Big Whup at Echo Curio. Nicole Simone opens for Faun Fables at Spaceland. ANAVAN, The Press Fire!, and Faav at Mountain Bar. Michelle Featherstone celebrates the release of her new record Blue Bike at the Hotel Cafe.

Sunday, Molly Jenson celebrates the release of her lovely new record Maybe Tomorrow (due 3/3) at the Hotel Cafe. She's been working the cafe scene for awhile now and it's good to see her break through a bit as of late. They're looking to make a dent on the charts early by getting fans to purchase the record on its release week. Seems like a good idea to us. Check her site for details on how to help the cause. Pocahaunted, Robedoor, and others at Echo Curio. The Parson Red Heads, The World Record, One Trick Pony, and others at Air Conditioned Lounge. The Flying Tourbillon Orchestra, Calamity Magnet and others at Dakota. Blue Jungle, The Health Club, and Dirt Dress at The Que Sera. And Blank Blue at Space 15 Twenty.

Los Angeles Needs... A Thursday Update

Los Angeles Needs... A Thursday Update
It was wall-to-wall last night at Low End Theory (pictured above). In only a few years, the little club that could has become the lock for Wednesday nights. We had a feeling that Alpha Pup was onto something a few years ago but we never could have imagined such a huge global reaction. There were people who flew in from Germany and Vancouver to see Daedelus and Nosaj Thing last night. All of whom are probably on their way to getting their own MIDI controllers right now after seeing those boys tickle buttons for a few hours. Next week Oaktown's Restiform Bodies and Egadz are up to bat. You know where to be.

Tonight is quite obviously the busiest night of the week/month. With all the various happenings, we're actually at a loss as to what you should go to. We'll be making a concerted effort to see at least four of our favorite locals tonight and of course the one and only PAJO as he celebrates the release of his new Misfits cover album Scream with Me, which is being released as a limited edition vinyl pressing of 1000. We bought five online and we fully expect that number to double tonight. And some might scoff at even the idea of seeing HEALTH (we do believe we saw Ben from HEALTH at Low End Theory last night), Abe Vigoda, and Captain Ahab in Los Angeles at anywhere but The Smell, but we're actually quite excited to see them in a new setting -- although we may have to urinate on a wall or something just for ol' times.

PAJO - "Where Eagles Dare"

Ariel Pink's Haunted Graffiti - "Shaven"

Captain Ahab - "I Can't Believe It's Not Booty"

Chelsea Girls - "Barracuda" (Live at the Roxy, 2/7/09)

Los Angeles Needs... A Tuesday Update

Los Angeles Needs... A Tuesday Update
Really? A Tuesday update?!

Saw the finale of the Holloys residency last night at The Echo. Before this residency, we hadn't a full set since that Ovrcast night a few years ago when they were just called Holloy. Songs sounded different back then, technically brilliant but more on the avant side of the garde. Songs now are much more accessible and even the most progressive tunes have an undeniable groove behind them. Supposedly they're going on a tour soon and are looking for players so hit them up if you're interested (and you should be interested). Avi Buffalo also played last night and are looking for a guitarist so you might want to start practicing your scales right about now.

Go see Robert Francis tape a performance tonight at 11pm at the Hotel Cafe for Carson Daly. RSVP here by 5pm. Air date is TBD. Francis plays the Troubadour on 4/2. Tickets go on sale 2/26.

Ben of Classical Greek Theatre is risking life and limb to blog on the road with The Henry Clay People for the next week or so. If you don't know Ben, he's one of the best writers in town. He's also known for telling it like it is, meaning if HCP sucks it up on one of these nights you'll be the first to know -- although we don't foresee that happening very much.

This Friday, three of L.A.'s best concert photogs (and most eligible bachelors) are exposing themselves. Wait, let's read that announcement again. Ok, correction: Simon Cardoza, Jeff Koga, and Benjamin Hoste's group photo exhibit "Exposure" has its opening reception this Friday at Where (1519 Griffith Park Blvd.). All those shows over the past few years that you probably didn't go to were probably captured by these guys. There will also be bands playing after 9pm during Friday night exhibit viewings:

2/27 - Le Switch, Manhattan Murder Mystery, Divisadero
3/6 - The Voyeurs, One Trick Pony, The Monolators
3/13 - Meiko, Evan Way, Adeline
3/20 - The Movies, Ema and the Ghosts, Gena Rowlands Band

Don't forget Nico Vega's postponed record release show from a few weeks back is tonight at the Roxy.

Good shows happening at the Detroit in Costa Mesa in the coming weeks. See big bands in a venue the size of Spaceland: GZA (3/6), Autolux (4/2), Black Moth Super Rainbow/School of Seven Bells (5/30)... Fever Ray (Karin Dreijer Andersson of The Knife) makes her solo debut in town at the Music Box on 6/1... The Engine Collision Festival begins Thursday featuring an appearance by David Lynch, a Cherry Vanilla book reading, and the second season premiere of "Metalocalypse"... The Little Death (Moby and Laura Dawn collab) make another appearance in town this Friday at The Dragonfly. Not really a Moby fan, but Laura Dawn is an old friend so we should probably finally see this project of hers already.

Fever Ray - "If I Had a Heart"

Tug at My Sleeve, I Got a Heart That Leaves, Just Like the Winter Do To Trees

Tug at My Sleeve, I Got a Heart That Leaves, Just Like the Winter Do To Trees
Great week. Are we allowed to say we're exhausted? No? Darn.

Caught wind of Henry Rollins leaving Indie 103 for KCRW, which might incite headlines of "Morning Becomes Mnemonic" for the next few weeks -- not so much to recall the once student-run college radio's glory days of playing punk rock, but more for Rollins' bit roll in the dumb slash brilliant film Johnny Mnemonic. Knowing KCRW for awhile and admittedly working there in the 90's, it's had a stigma over the years as kind of the beacon for industry hipsterdom. You know, the station that square-rimmed black-clad PR-types turn on at 9am to see who their next client will be. Or the station food and wine elitists tune into on Saturday mornings to hear what the hot new patisserie in Brentwood is all about. And ok so we admit doing the latter, but dammit Evan Kleiman talking about porcini mushrooms for an hour can be pretty damn sexy. The point is, even though Rollins worked with the station in the 80's, one might not think today's prim and proper KCRW audience would be the target demographic for the punk hero behind such classic lyrics as "I smash fists into my face. I feel it. This is good." We don't even remember the last time KCRW played a Black Flag song. On the other hand, if any station in the universe needs a kick in the music programming arse, it's KCRW. Animal Collective and Bon Iver have become synonymous to KCRW as Foo Fighters and Green Day is to KROQ. And there's nothing wrong with that but the mere thought of XBXRX (or whatever new African throat singing punk rock troupe Rollins finds on his journeys) reaching the ears of every Pottery Barn-lovin' Banana Republic-wearin' Westsider just makes us happy. Rollins' show debuts 3/7 every Saturday an the 6-8pm slot.

Ok, so lots to get to this weekend. First, tune into The Movies on "Demolisten" tonight, which apparently has taken nearly a decade to get them on the show. Film geeks will probably be at Royce Hall for Werner Herzog. While electroclash geeks will probably be at Avalon for the Fischerspooner DJ set. And noise punk geeks will probably be at The Smell for Thurston Moore. That leaves local music geeks like us having to settle for The One AM Radio, One Trick Pony, and others at Temp Spaces. Sara Lov and others at Home. Les Blanks, Amateurs, The Voyeurs, and others at Old Towne Pub. Correatown, Red Maids, and The Gift Machine and Echo Curio. Donovan Frankenreiter and Gary Jules at the Roxy. Kill Kill Kill, The Franks, and others at pehrspace. Monster at Young Art. JB at g'net. And you must not forget the closing night for "Nostalgia's No Good" at L'KEG (pictured above on opening night with Jim Smith on the decks) featuring performances by Pizza! and PROTECTME.

Saturday, one of our favorites The Cauterized celebrates the release of their new record Reborn in Blood at the Knitting Factory. Joshua Radin, Meiko, and others at the Music Box. Indie 103 support show at The Scene with Go West Young Man. Bobb Bruno EP release show at Beta Level. Daedelus, Free the Robots, and others at Out of Asia. Pop Levi, Acid Girls and others at Echoplex. Justin Riner, Ema and the Ghosts, and others at the AlterKnit. Rats, Devin Sarno, and LA Fog at Echo Curio. Gowns, Vaudeville, and others at pehrspace. Deep Sea Diver, Crankcase, and others at The Prospector. And The Fall Trees EP release with Secret Alphabet at On the Rox.

Sunday, kids show at The Echo with The Broken West and Whispertown 2000. Everest does an afternoon show down at Fingerprints. "A Suite for Ma Dukes" at the Luckman. Arthur Russell Tribute with Hecuba and Julia Holter at PTP. VOICEsVOICEs tour kickoff fundraiser at The Smell. The Pity Party battle at Echoplex. The Long Lost record release recital at Panorama. Alex & Sam at Home. The Kids of Widney High, The Mormons, and others at The Scene. Spirit Vine, Eagle Winged Palace, and Rocking Horse People at Echo Curio. And Haim and others at the Hotel Cafe.

The Whispertown 2000 - "Restless" (MP3)
The Broken West - "Perfect Games" (MP3)

Los Angeles Needs... A Thursday Update

Los Angeles Needs... A Thursday Update
Thanks to all those attended last night's "Live at Mr. T's Bowl." We know it's difficult to sometimes get out of the house during these rough times so it means a lot that you could make it to see these bands. This was the third "Live" show we've done at T's and probably the most technically successful. At our peak, we had over 500 viewers watching the video feed -- or basically 499 more people than our total readership. Anyway, if you missed any of it, a video archive is up at Stickam from some of the performances and at some point we'll be posting the audio/video we recorded separately. Special thanks to all the bands for playing and to Arlo for making it sound amazing in there as usual. And thanks to the bigger blogs for mentioning the show and to Loudvine for the great review!

Hm, what's up tonight... Former Wild Colonials lead singer Angela McCluskey returns to Los Angeles tonight at the Hotel Cafe with special guest Lili Haydn. Wild Colonials were a staple in the club scene some 15 years ago with a great cult following. We suppose "cult following" means one of those bands that achieved critical acclaim that never translated into huge mainstream success, which of course is our favorite type of band. We were introduced to Angela (and Shark) through frequent collaborator Cindy Wasserman (of Dead Rock West) but lost track of her when she moved to NY in 2001 until she popped up on some Télépopmusik tracks the last few years. It's safe to say The Colonials were one the most quintessential alt-rock bands of the mid-90's in L.A. and anytime Ms. McCluskey makes her way back to these parts it's a gift. Yeah, this probably still won't get all the hip kids out to see her tonight, but maybe the fact that she's Lily Allen's godmother and that Lily Allen has been in town the last few days will? Yeesh, the things we must do to sell a good band.

Los Angeles Needs... A Wednesday Update

Los Angeles Needs... A Wednesday Update
It took only a few bars into "Spandex Hitman" to get used to the new configuration of The Monolators with their new guitarist Raymond Gurrola (formerly of EKUK and Maxwell Demon) last night at Echo Curio. And further blurring the lines of irony and coincidence, former Monolators guitarist Tom Bogdon's band Shirley Rolls were playing exactly 5.9 miles away at Mr. T's Bowl around the same time. While it may have been a tough decision for long-time fans to choose between them, we were lucky enough to make it to both and enjoy the same hearing loss at each. So for the first bout between Monos vs. Shirleys, we'll call it a draw -- although you be the judge (see vids below).

Hope to see some of you at tonight's show at Mr. T's. Again, if you're not up for going out tonight because of illness, laziness, or otherness, be sure to hit up either Stickam, CoverItLive.com, or our Twitter. We tested everything last night and everything shockingly worked -- we actually noticed two people checking out our live broadcast of Odd Modern's performance. Keep in mind, the video quality is obviously not going to be that great in low light but we'll do our best. Also, we printed out way too many posters for tonight's show so we'll have some for free. As always, we encourage wearing t-shirts of your favorite obscure/mainstream local/non-local awesome/crappy band, especially if they're actually playing tonight. Finally, there will also be free pizza for those who show up early and why wouldn't you when Cobra Lilies will be going on first?

In other news: Speaking of free pizza. Everyone's favorite food group Pizza! is giving away two free downloads on their site. Go get them and go see them live on Friday at L'KEG... The 2009 Eagle Rock Music Festival is now taking applicants for this year's event, scheduled for 10/3. Get in quickly or you'll be left out... UK buzz band Sky Larkin will be shooting a video in town on 3/15 before SXSW and they need extras. If you're interested in being apart of rock music video history email them.

Los Angeles Loves... Live at Mr. T's Bowl
We're back for another edition of "Live at Mr. T's Bowl" on Wednesday. We've had a few months to prepare for the night and we're still not really ready. All that matters though is that for a few hours we listen to some great bands play music. That we can do. We've got quite an eclectic troupe of bands playing on this night with Halloween Swim Team, Monstro (side project of Ozma's Daniel Brummel), Cobra Lilies (side project of The Monolators, Ema and the Ghosts, Divisadero, Smells Like Flan, and Gunferty), Featherbeard, and Trick Tracy (Brandon Schwartzel of Castledoor). If you've seen any one of these bands you know how good this whole night will be.

Again, we'll be recording the show live and hopefully we'll be simulcasting the show via Stickam. It didn't work last time but this time we have a backup at CoverItLive.com. If that doesn't work, then we suppose we'll just Twitter the damn show then. The point is, we hope you can make the show in-person, but if you've caught that nasty flu bug that's been going around, you can check out the show online.

Los Angeles Needs... A Monday Update

Los Angeles Needs... A Monday Update
Can't tell you how much fun we had at the Vermont House on Friday. The photo above doesn't even begin to depict the sheer chaos of the night. All the bands honestly sounded great even with technical issues galore. Thanks to How To Be A Microwave for letting us tag along and to all the beautiful faces we saw. Say Cheese and Die! posted great photos of the show.

More Monday residency madness tonight. Jane's Addiction has a show at Echoplex (if you followed them on Twitter you could have gotten tickets.) Foot Village, E&E, Puppy Dog and others for Carnage Mondays at pehrspace. And Chris Seefried joins Jay Nash at Room 5... Listen up for Juana Molina tomorrow on "Morning Becomes Eclectic." You Were Born on Time For the Biggest Lie

You Were Born on Time For the Biggest Lie
Congrats to Heart on their big show last night at The Echo. We're excited to see another local label do some good things for the scene and things got off to a great start with last night's showcase. We hadn't seen The Happy Hollows in a few months so we almost forgot how good "Shark..." and "Megaman" were. And The Movies, Crooked Cowboy, Anni Rossi, Avi Buffalo, and the rest of the lineup were also in fine form. Look out for all these bands to make a dent in 2009.

Tonight, we're hanging out at the Vermont and maybe we'll see you there. Otherwise, you might want to be seen at The Echo with The Soft Pack and Tijuana Panthers playing. Don Caballero, sBach, and others at Spaceland. Aceyalone at Dakota. The Spires, Franklin For Short, The Voyeurs, and Jack Wilson, Jr. at pehrspace. Jon Brion/The Coles at g'net. La Santa Cecilia at Juanita's. Drag the River at The Scene. And Prince Paul and Peanut Butter Wolf do a pre-Valentine's Day git at Echoplex. Also, listen up for Cinderella Motel tonight on "Demolisten."

For Valentine's Day there's plenty of places to make out at including Sparks at Royce Hall. Anavan, I.E., Extreme Animals, and others at The Smell. Rickie Lee Jones at g'net. Halloween Swim Team, Bloody Robots, and others at MotionLA. Realicide, Moment Trigger, Birth!, Kawaiietly Please, and others at Women. The Hectors and others at The Scene. Thee Makeout Party, Peachfuzz, and others at Redwood. Blue Jungle, Bastidas, and others L'KEG. And don't forget Love Groove, Lovers & Strangers, Lucent L'amour, and the return of Nightlife.

Los Angeles Loves... The Vermont House

Los Angeles Loves... The Vermont House
So tonight's a biggie. We were asked by the fine folks at How To Be A Microwave to help out with a show at the Vermont House. If you've never been, The Vermont is a wonderful old house on S. Vermont that hosts some of the best DIY shows this city has ever conceived. Crystal Antlers, The Underground Railroad to Candyland, Abe Vigoda, Wallpaper, Japanther, and Halloween Swim Team (who recently celebrated the release of their new album there on New Year's Eve) are just a few of the shows you might have missed over the years. The performance area (a second story window nook of a stage that perches above a steep stairwell) is ridiculously tiny for most of these bands, obviously making it all the more punk when you fall down the stairs during times of chaos (like we have, numerous times). We gave up long ago trying to take photos in there but Shanty Cheryl has some great ones from the URTC we both went to. Anyway, it's an awesome house with awesome people behind it all and tonight's lineup is too good for any of us. The show is being co-presented by L.A. Record, How To Be a Microwave, Say Cheese and Die!, and us. Hope to see you there.

Los Angeles Needs... A Thursday Update

Los Angeles Needs... A Thursday Update
Too busy to do a Wednesday update thing yesterday and even busier today but what the hey...

Stopped by The Echo on Monday to see Sabertooth Tiger's first show in about a year. Good to hear mostly new songs, which we presume will be on a new record of some sort (their debut record is already three years old). Also, good to see Zack de la Rocha get recognized by everyone in the room... Tuesday, we revisited The Echo for The French Semester's early slot. Didn't recognize half the songs, which is an outright tell that we haven't seen them in awhile. Love the harmonies on the verses these boys make. L.A. is badly in need of more indie pop bands like this one. Later, we trotted down the street to Echo Curio for Big Digits, Baseck, I.E., Gumshoes, and Faav, all of whom made up the funnest lineup of the week. Just ask members of Anavan, Captain Ahab, and LACO$TE (seen above). After which, we headed to Mr. T's to take some photos of boxViolet who own Tuesdays at the club this month... Wednesday belonged to the all-female led lineup at The Bordello, highlighted by the solo debut of Orenda Fink. We have to pinch ourselves that both members of Azure Ray now call L.A. their home (at least for now) with one half watching the other half perform brand new songs off her upcoming record. We're very much looking forward to this.

So, is everyone ready for tonight's feast of plenty? Too many shows/events/meetups going on so we hope your chosen destination(s) is a good one. As for us, it's a coin flip, but we must say with some late additions to the night (and its proximity to Burrito King/Taco Zone), The Echo has the best lineup of the month. And even though we'd love to see our friends play the Music Box, their shows are long past the need for our attendance. Least not we forget the record release shows at the Troubadour and the Hotel Cafe; those two social megamedia gatherings; and of course catching the musical guest on the Tonight Show.

Also, here's a little teaser for tomorrow's Friday the 13th show we're helping with at the Vermont House: Tweak Bird, Halloween Swim Team, Silverghost, Non+, and Bad Parents. Holy shit, right?

Finally, happy birthday today to Meredith Meyer (record release show on 4/8).

Everybody's doing it because everybody's doing it.

There we were last night having dinner with some friends in Koreatown when the feeds started coming in. Photo blogger Koganuts was the first to report a car chase on the Westside, stating later that spike strips were ineffective on the white Bentley. Shortly after, blogger Ms. Maria makes a funny comment regarding her need of spike-strip resistant tires. Then LAist, LAMetblogs, NetZoo, LASnark get in on the action, followed by dance-pop divas Esthero and Little Boots throwing in their priceless perspectives on the happenings with DJ Rhettmatic (World Famous Beat Junkies) coming in with some excellent commentary. Then suddenly all of the above report nearly simultaneously that the driver in question might be DJ Khaled. In short, one of the most compelling car chases in Los Angeles car chase history happened before our eyes in messages of less than 140 characters from a wide spectrum of L.A.'s finest. And, best of all, we didn't have to move one inch away from our delicious Deungshim-gui. That, in a nutshell, is the brilliance of Twitter.

In the last six months, Twitter has broken away from the microblogging pack to become the essential communication tool for in-the-know Angelenos and basically if you're not on it you are seriously missing out. Whether it be one of those "secret" shows you only hear about the following morning or just wondering what the heck Demi Moore is doing lately, it's sure to become a Top 5 app on your Blackberry/iPhone.

Below is a list of locals who Twitter that we recommend you hit "follow" on. And for those who want to follow from afar use Tweetstalk and go stealth. Either way, if more and more friends start using Twitter, then you can once and for all delete those MySpace and Facebook accounts you've been threatening to do for five years. Also, we didn't really add celebrities so if that's your thing go here for a more thorough listing.
