Los Angeles Needs... A Tuesday Update

Los Angeles Needs... A Tuesday Update
Really? A Tuesday update?!

Saw the finale of the Holloys residency last night at The Echo. Before this residency, we hadn't a full set since that Ovrcast night a few years ago when they were just called Holloy. Songs sounded different back then, technically brilliant but more on the avant side of the garde. Songs now are much more accessible and even the most progressive tunes have an undeniable groove behind them. Supposedly they're going on a tour soon and are looking for players so hit them up if you're interested (and you should be interested). Avi Buffalo also played last night and are looking for a guitarist so you might want to start practicing your scales right about now.

Go see Robert Francis tape a performance tonight at 11pm at the Hotel Cafe for Carson Daly. RSVP here by 5pm. Air date is TBD. Francis plays the Troubadour on 4/2. Tickets go on sale 2/26.

Ben of Classical Greek Theatre is risking life and limb to blog on the road with The Henry Clay People for the next week or so. If you don't know Ben, he's one of the best writers in town. He's also known for telling it like it is, meaning if HCP sucks it up on one of these nights you'll be the first to know -- although we don't foresee that happening very much.

This Friday, three of L.A.'s best concert photogs (and most eligible bachelors) are exposing themselves. Wait, let's read that announcement again. Ok, correction: Simon Cardoza, Jeff Koga, and Benjamin Hoste's group photo exhibit "Exposure" has its opening reception this Friday at Where (1519 Griffith Park Blvd.). All those shows over the past few years that you probably didn't go to were probably captured by these guys. There will also be bands playing after 9pm during Friday night exhibit viewings:

2/27 - Le Switch, Manhattan Murder Mystery, Divisadero
3/6 - The Voyeurs, One Trick Pony, The Monolators
3/13 - Meiko, Evan Way, Adeline
3/20 - The Movies, Ema and the Ghosts, Gena Rowlands Band

Don't forget Nico Vega's postponed record release show from a few weeks back is tonight at the Roxy.

Good shows happening at the Detroit in Costa Mesa in the coming weeks. See big bands in a venue the size of Spaceland: GZA (3/6), Autolux (4/2), Black Moth Super Rainbow/School of Seven Bells (5/30)... Fever Ray (Karin Dreijer Andersson of The Knife) makes her solo debut in town at the Music Box on 6/1... The Engine Collision Festival begins Thursday featuring an appearance by David Lynch, a Cherry Vanilla book reading, and the second season premiere of "Metalocalypse"... The Little Death (Moby and Laura Dawn collab) make another appearance in town this Friday at The Dragonfly. Not really a Moby fan, but Laura Dawn is an old friend so we should probably finally see this project of hers already.
