Thank you to everyone (bands/patrons/pehrspace) for their unbelievable kindness in letting us present last Friday's show. Pretty much no one (including perhaps even us) knew of the night's full details until about 7pm the night of the show and it still went on without a hitch. And all the artists sounded wonderful. Anyway, thanks again and we hope to be back soon. Actually soon will be 5/11 at Casey's.

That picture above is the obligatory setlist tiltshift-ish shot we took of HT Heartache's setlist on Wednesday. Coincidentally, she's playing tonight at pehrspace. And it's all ages so if you didn't get into that show (which incidentally was one of the best shows we saw all of April) because you're turning 21 next decade then you're in luck. And, look, we put a cute little heart on "Turn Black" as a little hint that we will be crying when it is played tonight. Also, Sara Melson was just added to the lineup!

This night almost took the life out of everyone involved but somehow we managed to get everything in order. Tonight at pehrspace we're hosting an intimate little show featuring a few of our favorite singer-songwriters of the past few years.
Let's start with Ms. Nettie Rose beginning with the one thing that's on everyone's mind when they see her: She's the granddaughter of Alan Freed (yes, that Alan Freed), and following in his footsteps the young Rose certainly has a knack for this music stuff. She's been quietly building a following of classic Country & Western music enthusiasts on the Westside, forcing us to trek over to her regular joint the Unurban (which is one of the first places we saw Sara Bareilles and Holly Conlan) quite a times over the years. She self-released an EP of some tunes a few years ago that made its way to our desk and we immediately were struck by her level of songwriting at such a young age. "Ride Ride Ride" is destined for Grand Ole Opry glory. And look out for a new album soon.
In one way or another, you've probably seen Jamie Drake around town whether she's singing with any one of her famous friends (Sally Jaye, Leslie Stevens, and Brother Sal to name a few), having a momentary stint as a member of The Flying Tourbillon Orchestra, or at Crane's where she's been playing regularly for a few years and where she's currently holding the Wednesday residency for a most all of 2010. She's now about to self-release her debut record When I Was Yours on 5/25. It's an undeniably charming collection of sugary sweet pop/folk songs with the title track and "Daydream" being the clear front-runners for Meredith/McDreamy montage music. This is probably music to Ms. Drake's ears as we all know what one song featured on a hit television show can do for the unpaid bills of an independent musician. And if you like what you hear, you should help as much as you can to help offset the costs of the record. And you really should help. Jamie Drake is one of the most honest-to-gosh nicest gals in town. Not to mention, one damn talented lady.

Ed Helms and Seth Morris made some fun little comments about Coachella on Saturday (we're paraphrasing): Anyone notice how less annoying Los Angeles has gotten in the last 24 hours? I have no interest in going to Coachella. Thousands of people in the desert being indifferent together. I don't think I have enough denim to be allowed into Coachella... Of, course, they were joking (through puppets, no less) but that's what pretty much what happened in town while the others were out. Yes, Los Angeles survived another year of the desert storm and we have honestly no idea what happened out there since we were catching other lineups we couldn't pass up, most of which we might have failed to mention on our Friday update thing. But if you were on the Westside on Friday for those next big thing bands we applaud your resourcefulness.
Anyway, post-Coachella week ain't too bad either. We're getting lazier and lazier with this thing so we'll just post the highlights of the highlights.
There are several record release shows this week with Ozomatli (check out the Ozomatli vs. KCRW Soundclash remix project here), Take, HT Heartache, Alright Alright, Fireball Ministry, Ratt, and Kottonmouth Kings all putting out new records... Warpaint's got a few low-key shows in the next week before heading overseas to become even more famous. Occidental College (4/20), UCLA (4/21), and KiDROCKERS (4/25)... Saint Rocke is putting itself on the map hosting three big KROQ-y shows this week with NOFX, Cypress Hill, and Authority Zero (most are sold out)... TV highlights: Phoenix on Leno (4/19), Weezer on Carson (4/19, Rerun), Cypress Hill with Tom Morello on Kimmel (4/19), Devo on Kimmel (4/20), Natalie Merchant on Leno (4/21), Jakob Dylan on Letterman (4/21), Rob Zombie on Kimmel (4/21), Silversun Pickups on Fallon (4/21, Rerun), Broken Social Scene on Letterman (4/22), Taylor Hawkins on Kimmel (4/22).

So another year of Coachella has come around and the inevitable divide of those who are attending versus those cannot afford to attend versus those who have become bitter about the event and have vowed never to step near Indio again versus those who have more important things to do this weekend. And even if you fall under some other category, this weekend is filled with plenty of pro-chella/no-chella events for everybody to enjoy. Here are just the highlights...
Tonight, No-Chella is probably the best alternative for those not going to the desert or for those needing a detour prior to heading to the desert. Just be sure you know someone in one of the bands or Pomona College that can get you in because it's only for students and we hear it might be pretty strict on that rule. If you're smart and jump the fence, you'll get to see The Happy Hollows, Avi Buffalo, Tijuana Panthers, Moses Campbell, and a slew of other great locals play for free... A little closer to home, Autolux plays the Bootleg. Joseph Arthur continues his residency at The Stronghold. Andy Clockwise and others at the Hotel Cafe. Les Blanks continue their residency at Casey's. Moses Campbell and friends at The Smell. Repeater, Telomere Repair, Greater California, Bella Novela, and others at Alex's. Former Ghosts, Whitman, Bestial Mouths, and others at Sync. Jonah Ray hosts another Meltdown. Sarah Silverman at g'net. Black Apples, Dirt Dress, and others open for Mark Sultan.
