First You Say It's Ok, Then You Say There's No Way

Excuse us, excuses. We were busy this week. Not just shows, which were many, but we're in the middle of some projects as well as some swell things planned for September through December.

Oh, September. Typically one of the busiest months of the year for us as everyone prepares for that last fourth quarter hoorah, we've been strategizing this September for weeks.

Three-day weekends are neat, especially in this heat. Old Time Relijun with Lucky Dragons at the Smell tonight. Also, the greatness that is Ovrcast celebrates 2 years at Dave's. Jax's show at pehrspace. Willoughby and Electrocute at El Cid. Whispertown 2000 and Wintergreen at Spaceland... On Saturday, Mika Miko return from their tour with a big show at The Smell. Benefit for Brizzah from Child P. at pehr. Also, Brian Jonestown Massacre at Echoplex for two nights... Lee Hazlewood tribute at the Bordello on Sunday.

Monday residencies this month are competitive given the lineups on each night but if you don't see The Happy Hollows at least once consider yourself blacklisted from this site and perhaps the city of Los Angeles altogether. When asked by one of our four readers at the recent Now Blog This! convention who we thought the best band in Los Angeles was at this very moment, we told them to go to The Echo on Mondays in September and find out... Not that you shouldn't go see Gram Rabbit, Seasons, and The Valley Arena (who Jax has been repping for awhile) because you should. Other residencies this month include The Watson Family Hour, Ceci Bastida, Sarabeth Tucek, Marié Digby, Seasons, Letting Up Despite Great Faults, Hello Menno, and the brilliant stuff that Sean Carnage is doing for his new film at pehrspace. CD release shows include The Donnas, The Deadly Syndrome, Flying Lotus + Mestizo, The Monolators, Gabriel Mann, Melissa Maki, and Sacha Sacket... There are also big-name acts with multiple nights around town including Spoon, Lucinda Williams, New Pornographers, Clap Your Hands Say Yeah, Rodrigo & Gabriela, Ben Kweller, and Low (Amy Winehouse cancelled both of her dates in L.A. because she drinks too much). Other tours hitting Los Angeles are Underworld, Arcade Fire/LCD Soundsystem, Over the Rhine, Medeski Scofield Martin & Wood, Stevie Wonder, Arctic Monkeys, Midlake/Maria Taylor, !!!, Pet Shop Boys/Ladytron, Josh Rouse, The National/St. Vincent... And end-of-summer festivals close out with Neighborhood Festival, Nocturnal 2007 with Chemical Brothers, Summer Strummer, Antidoto 2007, Campout 2007, and KROQ Invasion with Smashing Pumpkins.

Some other notes: We now have a faq. We doubt anybody will read it but oh well... Also, if you ever need something to do on a particular night do check out the full calendar. C just added something like 250 new shows going into next year so we're sure you'll find something good to go to.

Los Angeles Needs... A Monday Update
Yo... What's up?.. Nothing, just calling to see what's up... What'd you do this weekend?.. Really? I didn't see you... Just a few bands... Jay Reatard... Mae Shi, damn, forgot how good they are... Moonrats killed... Devon... Jonah... Yeah, crowded, I know... Not too long. Went over to Terrabyte... Yeah, Tycho rules... Test Shot Starfish? Totally incredible... Anyway... Ok, so I gotta get back to work... Yeah, the boss is coming... Seriously, I'm hanging up... What are you doing tonight?...

Another busy week ahead of us, Los Angeles... The Section Quartet CD release show tonight (another one?) at the Troubadour with very special guests. Monday residencies end with I Make This Sound, Low Vs. Diamond, Manic, and Crash Kings. Meiko, The Finches, The Mormons, and Maxeen's respective Tuesday residencies end tomorrow. And Black Palms' Wednesday residency at Moscow will finish off its run. If you haven't made it out to any of these nights we're sure you have a good reason... Tenlons Fort/David Israel tour finale at Tangier on Tuesday... Wilco and former local boy Richard Swift at the Greek Theatre on Wednesday... Kronos Quartet perform a free Grand Performances show at California Plaza on 8/30. Later on that night, go see Deadly Syndrome, Let's Go Sailing, and others at the Roxy.

In other news: Read about Gram Rabbit's new album RadioAngel and the RoboBeat (due 11/13)... Read what Seattle thinks or our beloved Earlimart and Patrick Park... Read about Mika Miko's recent visit to D.C.... Read about Lucinda Williams' upcoming 5-night/5-album live performance recording at the El Rey... Read about where The Airborne Toxic Event practices their two-step.

It's Been a Little While, Since You Flashed That California Smile

First of all, last night's blog-band orgy was amazing. Bands, bloggers, blog readers, and even a few blog groupies in a room geeking it out to music, getting drunk around a pool table, and making out in the photo booth (ok, no, but we tried). We've never been around real, professional bloggers before so getting tips on proper RSS feeding, understanding Flickr hacks, and weighing in on the Blogger Vs. Wordpress debate were both educational and rewarding. Seriously, though, the night was really fun. Bands were great, Joe on decks spun local bands which was perfect (although Jax was sorely missed too), and of course that obligatory monster box of pizza was brought out at one point. Thanks to The Scene for making it happen and inviting our sorry asses to such a prestigious event. Some better reviews from last night can be found here and here. And some photos are here.

Ok, so what's next? Well, F*ck Yeah, obviously. Things start off tonight with the pre-Festival at Dave's with Dios, Antimc, and others then all hell breaks loose the next two days with finale performances from The Fuse! and The Explosion; big-time local bands like Lavender Diamond, Midnight Movies, and Great Northern; and of course a bunch of bands who regularly play The Smell and Dave's but that most people are too scared of downtown to go see. And don't forget the comedy nights at Taix (fantastic lineup). The event is curated by The Keith Morris and The Sean Carlson. Sean, you may have outdone yourself this time... Other things happening this weekend include the goddess that is Sara Lov on Demolisten tonight. Also, The Juan MacLean and Rico from Belle and Sebastian spinning at 82 tonight... On Saturday, Summer Triangle at KGB with performances by The Airborne Toxic Event, IO Echo, and others... CD release show for Sam Sparro at Bordello... Rademacher, Death to Anders, and those lovable kids known as Vox Jaguars at pehrspace... And John Doe and Dead Rock West country punking it up at Safari Sam's. Great write-up on our old friends DRW by the one and only Buzz Bands... Inara George finishes up the weekend with the second and final installment of the "Sundays in August" series, the long-going tribute nights at her old home the Theatricum Botanicum with friends The Living Sisters, Tom Brosseau, Charlie Wadhams, Priscilla Ahn, and others.

You have a good weekend, Los Angeles. We heart thou.

Los Angeles ________ ... Marié Digby

This post is for mt since she's been hounding us about this girl.

We saw her open for Castledoor a few months ago but we know friends have been scouting Marié Digby for a few years since she won that Pantene contest. Apparently now she's getting tons of buzz with these Lonelygirl15-esque YouTube videos and appears to be managed by a team with some serious marketing savvy with street teams, fan sites, and iTunes exclusives already in place without even having a real release yet (although the "Umbrella" cover is kind of predictable isn't it?).

Anyway, she's got a pleasant enough voice and her songs are Lilith Fair fodder. Plus, her look, styling, and even her name (pronounced 'Mar-ee-ay' like Perrier) will undoubtedly get her on magazine covers and late night talk shows -- she already appeared on Carson Daly earlier this month. So the machine is in full effect but hopefully for her sake she survives it all with a legitimate career a year from now.

Also, on a related note, Mandy Moore's new record isn't doing too well so doing covers of summer hits might spark interest. Well, that's the plan anyway. And while we received hundreds of other covers of the song we won't even go there.

You owe us one, mt.

Marié Digby performs at the Hotel Cafe on 8/31 and has the Tuesday residency there through September.

Los Angeles Needs... A Monday Update

We frankly loathe the expression, but someone recently called this week "the cat's tits" -- someone being our friend's 13-year-old nephew, recently being 15 minutes ago. We have no idea where this saying came from and the kid is obviously using it wrong but if a week needed to be compared to kittie titties this would be it.

Our schedule is kittie littered with must-see slash must-attend art exhibit openings, cd release shows, industry showcases, long-awaited comeback shows, in-stores, meet & greets, comedy nights, house parties, open mic nights, dj battles, mc battles, baby rattles, fiddle faddle, and we haven't even discussed Frick Yeah Fest this weekend. But let's just keep things simple...

We'll be at a few of the residencies tonight to see some of you. But Low Vs. Diamond's Spaceland residency seems to be where everyone has been heading this month. It got too crowded for us last week so we left after Sunday Drivers who have gotten so good we need to be dating them soon... Earlimart returns to "Morning Becomes Eclectic" on Tuesday then celebrates the Eastside release of their new, great album Mentor Tormentor at the Rec Center with The Parson Red Heads and The Pity Party. One or two photos from Friday's Westside release can be found over yonder... Meanwhile, over at The Echo, Foreign Born celebrates their long-awaited CD release with In Waves and Nevenka. The no in's-and-out's for those release shows will make it difficult for us to go back and forth but we'll wing it... The Like return to the stage after nearly a century of writing for their new record. They play at Cinespace Tuesday night... Also on Tuesday, David Lynch is doing a DVD signing for Inland Empire at 2PM at the Grove Barnes & Noble. That movie was pretty great, by the way, and very much worth being a fanboy/fangirl for a few seconds to have it signed by the genius that is Lynch... Sit tight, we're still on Tuesday... The brilliance that is Radio8Ball makes its Los Angeles debut with two shows at the Hayworth presenting Jon Auer on Tuesday and Mirah on Wednesday. Those are going to be fun... Ok, now Wednesday... Ferraby Lionheart tapes his segment of the "Late Late Show" which will air Friday. By the way, his scheduled CD release show at Bordello has been cancelled due to his recent booking on the Brunettes tour so we'll call his Hotel Cafe show a few weeks ago the release show, especially because we were there and especially especially because it was pretty fantastic... Yeah Yeah Yeahs at the Mayan which we can sort of call a local band show now that Karen O. is a part-time Angeleno... Ok, we're getting tired... Thursday, that blog show everyone's talking about... Friday, blah blah blah...

Finally, as you might have noticed, this feature has kind of turned itself into a weekly band classifieds section... which we love. If you don't join these bands we will and no wants that. Hit them up on MySpace for more details...

MERE MORTALS
Established indie-rockband needs a new drummer. Must be ready to tour. Primal Scream, Spiritualized, BRMC, T. Rex, Kasabian, Nico, Jesus and Mary Chain, NEU!, early Oasis, Lennon, Lydon, paisley Underground. We're creative, easy-going, and on the radar with good local and international press, nationwide airplay, TV placements, great shows. Please respond with an mp3 and a pic.

SPACE MTN
Looking for a man guitarist.

TENLONS FORT
After four months Tenlons Fort is tired and bored with crying into a microphone alone. Looking for musicians to tap into the new excitement. There are pop songs being written and for the joy of playing them, Tenlons Fort wants to be a band again. Looking for drums keyboards, bass, xylophone, guitar, cello, violin. In no particular order. No flakes, or as my friend said, no junkies. Looking to play Los Angeles shows and beyond. The dream of traveling the world with music is a must. Where is He Working? Where is He Working? Where is He Working? Where is He?

AMNION
Various kind musicians and singers.

HT HEARTACHE
Vocoderist. Vocoderer. One who can vocode.

You Get in a Heat, You Get in a Sulk

The heat...

So Sunset Junction should be fun. We'd love to join you but we hate the sun. That rhymed. Plus, we're saving our sweat for Fuck Yeah Fest next week. However, the must-sees this weekend are our friends The Parson Red Heads (first band show in a few months), The Culver City Dub Collective (all-star lineup), The Pity Party (who next year will probably be doing European festivals instead of slumming it with local ones), the goddess that is Medusa, Morris Day & the Time (as limber as ever), Bobby Matos (a local legend, educator, and purveyor of Afro-Cuban jazz), Buzzcocks (of course), Eskimohunter (to see if they can pull off their sonic light show at high noon), The Airborne Toxic Event (the anxiety and frustration of not being able to play a show up to the festival will undoubtedly make for an explosive performance), and The Movies ('cause they effing rule). As for Blonde Redhead and Autolux, go see them at the Wiltern on 10/25 instead so as to not let one decibel of their grandiosity out into the night air...

What? There are other things happening this weekend besides Conjunction Junction? Well, Buzzcocks are doing a warm-up show at Spaceland tonight... Root for Zanzibar Lewis at the Key Club tonight as she battles less-worthy bands for that Star 98.7 Rock Star contest... Tofu Fest... Hang the DJs 4 Year Anniversary/Official Sunset Junction after-party at The Echo with The Submarines and Pop Noir on Saturday... Beastie Boys begin a three-night affair with Los Angeles on Sunday... And Esthero and One Trick Pony redux at the Roxy on Sunday (an instant replay of their show last year together -- the first time we fell in love with OTP).

Oh, the heat.

Los Angeles Loves... To Now Blog This!

L.A.'s best blogs (and us) gather together on August 23 to put on a good ol' fashion rock show at the Scene for "Now Blog This! Vol. 2". J. Weiss over at Passion of the Weiss is presenting The Deadly Syndrome, J. Gage from An Aquarium Drunkard selected Le Switch, and K-Bronz at Buzz Bands chose Aushua. All are great bands that we cannot wait to see again. And in keeping with our namesake, we decided to present a band that not many Angelenos may have heard yet.

A friend caught Phoenix and the Turtle's CD release show last year in Pomona and recommended that we check them out when they opened for The Rosebuds a few months ago. Their feel for experimental chamber pop with touches of film score nuance is quite enchanting to our ears. And if you have a fondness for eels, Eisley, and Pixies you might feel the same way. The discovery was one that we have been quite anxious to share with our three readers and so we are pleased to have them for this special evening.

Los Angeles Needs... A Monday Update
Earlimart celebrates the release of their new album Mentor Tormentor on Friday at SWMBWC with Castledoor and The Happy Hollows, a lineup only rivaled by this weekend's Sunset Junction and Earlimart's other CD release show on 8/21 with The Parson Red Heads and The Pity Party. These shows will sell out so buy your tickets now.

Is Hanson's show tonight at the Hotel Cafe supposed to be a secret? Who cares. Meiko, Buddy, Whispertown 2000, and Jordi Seay alone are worth the line you'll probably be standing in... Dengue Fever headlines what will be a great evening of Cambodian rock at the Knitting Factory tomorrow. The night also features a screening of Sleepwalking Through the Mekong, the untold story of Dengue Fever, which we have been anxiously wanting to see for some time now.

Low End Theory is back at the Airliner after a whirlwind few months at Little Temple then the Echoplex. Supposedly, security will be beefed up this time so please leave your ballistics at home or in other words, wait until after the show to threaten each other with harmful weaponry. Blu, Exile, Ta'Raach, and House Shoes are this week's guests.

We're doing a limited printing of this poster for the show next week. Limited meaning like two. If you want one (one of the two) let us know.

Some of our favorite bands are still looking for players:

Space Mtn - Guitarist
Amnion - Various musicians and singers

And Tenlons Fort made a great ad that we would like to post...

Enjoy your week.

Strive To Be Humble Lest I Stumble

Good shows this past week, Los Angeles. So happy to see you all again.

Tonight, we assume everyone might be excited for Rilo Kiley at All Star. Pretty cute marketing ploys, these secret shows, but we're just afraid Red Jumpsuit Apparatus or Cartel might all of a sudden be the actual surprise performer which could potentially cause a mass suicide with the hundreds of indie kids expected to see their beloved Rilo. So perhaps Great Northern with the Twilight Sleep and The Comas at Spaceland seems like a less-bloody alternative. Perhaps... Saturday is all about The Ladybug Transistor, Papercuts, and Castledoor at Spaceland then stopping by the sports arena to sweat to the Tiësto oldies. On Sunday the almighty MF Doom at the El Rey.

This weekend also marks the first time this year that we will be going to an actual movie theater. We've just been craving that incomparable smell of theater-made popcorn, the toothache you get from eating too many Milk Duds and Junior Mints, and of course the circus-like atmosphere when people watching the trailers. Now, we just got figure out what to see. Hmm...

Two good write-ups in this week's LA Weekly that deserve your attention. Why did Long Gone leave us? And a review of last week's benefit and probable farewell for 400 Blows' Ferdinand Cudia. Tears. More tears for Hal Fischman who passed away this week. Fischman was a hard-nosed, straight from the hip anchorman with a delivery straight out of classic broadcast news television. We'll miss you.

Twilight Sleep - "Ice Capade" (MP3)

Los Angeles Needs... A Monday Update
First of all, thanks to everyone for coming out to support Friday's show at T's. The bands were fantastic. Be sure to check out I Make This Sound's Monday residency this month at The Bordello. Also, The Monolators have one show tomorrow back at T's for The Mormons 9th Anniversary show before leaving for the good ol' south for their first-ever shows in that area. So if you're anywhere in the vicinity of Tennessee or Georgia go see them.

Secondly, for anyone who was at our small summer soire on Saturday we thank you. We'll be doing more of those in the near future as soon as we recuperate from trying to do our best Robert Irvine imitation. A few photos up on Flickr.

Monday residencies begin tonight. We'll be stopping by everywhere to buy any band merch we don't already have numerous quantities of... It might get very crowded tomorrow at the Hotel Cafe so do yourself a favor and get there early for The Sweet Hurt (who will be playing in our favorite duo configuration), then you can ooh-ahh for Fionn Regan and Ferraby Lionheart. Speaking Senor Lionheart, there's a nice interview with him in today's edition of LAist. Speaking of nice interviews, The One AM Radio recently talked about how much we mystify him. The feeling's mutual, Mr. Hirway. Speaking of mutual feelings, miss Karen O. also explains her recent move to Los Angeles as well and now that this has happened we can now promote the Yeah Yeah Yeahs new EP Is Is and their show at the Mayan on 8/22... IPO continues this week with perhaps its best lineups spearheaded by appearances by festival veterans The Trainwrecks and Io Perry... Boom Bip on GTFU tonight... Tickets for Regina Spektor's 10/30 show at the Wiltern go on sale this Saturday but presale begins Wednesday if you're in the know... The brand new state-of-the-art 7000+ capacity Nokia Theatre just announced its inaugural concerts featuring two nights with The Eagles and The Dixie Chicks. Our proposal to have an la-underground event for its launch party apparently fell through the cracks. We apologize to our friends Anal Cunt and Vomit Bomb but scene politics seem to be in full effect with this one... Driving down the boulevard this morning and saw our ex-wife Michelle Pfeiffer getting a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. She still owes us alimony. We got kids to feed.

And So Gracefully We Age Into Infinity

This past week was exceedingly busy. Last Saturday alone had us at half-a-dozen different events from Long Beach to Los Feliz to the Getty to mid-Wilshire to Hollywood and finally at some rave punk thing downtown around 4am, all in effort to be back amongst our fellow Angelenos. We love you (and yes we carpooled)...

You also might see us carpooling tonight when Mika Miko opens for Gravy Train!!! at the Echo -- they're last show before heading off to see other parts of our great country for the next month. Also Big Business returns with a headliner spot at Spaceland. Gran Ronde opens for VHS or Beta at the Troubadour. The Icarus Line and our future wives Warpaint open for The Slits at the El Rey. And, yes, we're doing a show at T's that you might like too... Tomorrow Ferdinand's (we refuse to call him Ferdie) benefit show at the Echoplex with The Circle Jerks, The Locust, The Bronx, Har Mar, Qui, and other special surprises is going to be crazy. But if you don't like crazy but still like good, upstairs at The Echo, St. Vincent and Death Vessel would make a perfectly good evening as well... KCRW is having another pledge drive starting today. Not sure if anybody still listens to it anymore but the best time to pledge is during our old friend Anne Litt's segment the A Track. She's the coolest and still the only DJ we've ever given a record to in person and then actually played it on her show (not just sold it to Amoeba)... Residencies this month are a-plenty with Meiko, Black Palms, The Finches, Raine Maida (Our Lady Peace), The Mormons, Low Vs. Diamond, Manic, I Make This Sound, Foot Foot, The Crash Kings, After Midnight Project, Underwater City People, and Stevenson Ranch Davidians. We actually stopped by the Stevenson Ranch Davidians first night of their residency on Wednesday just to confirm that we love them. And, yes, this is still true... Finally, there's a great article by Boucher in this week's Time's Calendar Weekend. We've been saying it for years, San Francisco get over yourself.

Yes, The Monolators have once again put together a great lineup at T's that we're helping present. They also perform at Club Moscow on 8/8.

As always, the show is free, the beer is cheap, and the soundman is Arlo. Let's have fun...
