Yes, we're back at The Bordello and isn't it about time? It's not often we get to enjoy talking in Dracula-speak while walking seductively through the venue's blood red corridors. We've been asked to help with a night that should not need our help, but we will do so if only to please our dear lovers Shiloe -- although really because they put together an evening that would be foolish to miss.
Shiloe will be releasing their new EP "...And Now the Screaming Starts" on 10/14 through New and Used Records (who recently released Tigers Can Bite You's new EP "Taking and Running Away"). Look for the band to be providing a full preview of what is to come. Look for our friends Summer Darling to also be previewing some new material from their forthcoming EP/LP due later this year. We've only seen Spirit Vine a handful of times since their name change from Wake Up Incinerate so we're excited to see what new stuff they've got to show. And although not much has been said about Ojos Rojos since their majestic debut album last year 13, please know that we've been keeping a close watch on this psych-rock quartet for awhile and we're very pleased to see them on this night. Spinning throughout the evening will be Mr. Joe Fielder who should be nicknamed Prince Fielder for all the hits he'll be unleashing.

We were gone for a couple of days. Saw a few bands across the pond, some of which will be doing la-underground shows in the near future. Blah blah blah.
Couple things to mention...
Temple Bar closes its doors tonight with its final show featuring Irish band Seneca. While the Westside does get a bad rap for being a weeping wallow of unhip bands, Temple Bar has always been a breath of fresh air in bringing eclectic and vibrant lineups to their stage every night. Some of our long-time favorite bands to see there over the years included Maimou, The Peak Show, Quetzal, Medusa, Brazzaville, Kneebody, The Toledo Show, Los Pinguos, Vagenius, Merrick and it's no secret that Metric played their earliest shows there when there were living in L.A. We thank you for a wonderful eight years...
Get digital: Wait Think Fast's new long EP/mini album Vuelve Al Mar out digitally through Origami Records. Their release show is scheduled for 11/18 at The Echo... Also out today is Rademacher's new digital EP ERA out now through JAXART. They play every Monday at The Echo for free... Lukas Haas' new self-titled digital EP is out today through Pulse. Haas plays at 10/21 at Molly Malone's.
Evangenitals end their Tuesday residency at T's tonight. It's been a hoot.
It makes us happy to no end to see both Los Angeles baseball teams in the postseason and both NY teams not. We wish both teams good luck. We also wish baseball was actually more interesting to watch.

Congrats to Divisadero and Marvelous Toy for their phenomenal release show on Friday. That was one of the best shows we've ever been apart of and we're lucky to have been able to squeeze into that very crowded room. Thanks to everyone who was able to make it to the show and be sure to pick up their records at upcoming shows. Photos from the lovely evening are up... Later that night, Castledoor hosted their own release show for their new video for "Dumpster Diving" and by the look of all the sweaty, elated young people pouring out of the Lyric Hyperion at 1am, it seemed like a huge success as well. Hello, Friday.
Well, what a week wouldn't you say?.. Had to stop by the Alex & Sam residency on Monday. We still stand by our previous declaration we made for this band. This is their fourth Tangier residency this year, which might say something about their consistency as a great live act. But what we love is that the band isn't playing dumb to the fact that Ms. Sidley is the main attraction for most attendees. She's a star and everyone knows it. Beyond that, however, the songs are smartly written and perfectly executed, which must make any jazz geeks in the room feel quite at ease. They just finished recording their new album. Weasels might want to get on this one... Later on Monday, there was a bit of a family reunion at The Echo as pretty much everyone we have ever known in Los Angeles showed up to see some amazing bands. Big ups to Death to Anders for conjuring up such a fantastical lineup. CGT has the scoop on the night...
Tuesday, we saw lots of familiar faces at RFSL's "Let's Independent" but had to leave a bit early for Ding-a-Ling!, one of the few remaining traces of L.A.'s yesteryear music scene. With Bolles on the mic, Ms. Nora behind the bar, and a roomful of boys and girls we haven't seen in a decade (where have you been Martin Luther Lennon?), it's become our favorite weekly hangout for seeing wacko punk and noise bands all in the comfort of a local hole-in-the-wall . So, obviously, we couldn't pass up Creekbird, EXITMUSIC, and VOICEsVOICEs. And next week, prepare yourselves for the return of Harry Merry as he headlines Ding-a-Ling with special guests. His show from a few years ago still haunts us. Sidenote: Shortly after taking that picture, we turned around and realized that there was nobody else at The Smell. He had been playing just to us for the better part of an hour and we had no clue. Scary...
We feel for you if you were anywhere on the planet but Tangier on Wednesday. Attendees were lucky to see a loose and joyous set from Edward Sharpe & the Magnetic Zeros; some new songs from the not-so-cleverly named "The Lovely Syndrome"; and special opening sets by Captain Ragz and Tenlons Fort. Smiles all around the room (pictured above). Those who missed this spectacular evening might get something similar come December.
Congrats to The Monolators for their big Detour Fest BYOB win. We're not the biggest fans of these type of contests and hopefully no one took it too seriously but we also know how much of a big opportunity it is. And what an amazing show of support.

Do we really have to point out the obvious in that Castledoor is premiering their new video for "Dumpster Diving" tonight at the Lyric Hyperion Theatre? It would be like hiding an elephant in a flea circus. Still, it's important to mention that the video is too good to be seen on a substandard web version and absolutely needs to be viewed in all its colorful magic in the presence of friends, popcorn, and the band themselves. Also, you might want to arrive early to see the debut of hip-hop legend Trick Tracy (aka Castledoor bassist Brandon Schwartzel) rock the mic and a special performance by Tenlons Fort (last L.A. show until November).
Castledoor will screen the new video, perform, and perhaps finish off the evening with a little movie night into the wee hours. Let's hope it's a hot steamy makeout movie like Yentl. Fingers crossed.

Yes, Los Angeles has been the epicenter of many an infamous duel. Paris vs Nicole. Lohan vs Duff. The Airborne Toxic Event vs Pitchfork.
Now, comes the soon-to-be-historic duel of Divisadero vs Marvelous Toy. Both bands will be celebrating the release of their respective new recordings together at pehrspace on Friday. In this corner, Divisadero's debut album Lefty, a sonic wash of melancholy and musical metaphors wonderfully tied together to tell the sad tale of an emotionally and physically scarred boxer (yes, it's a concept album -- and a damn good one). And in that corner, Marvelous Toy's new EP "All Is Quiet" manages to once again prove a 4-piece can sound just as good as all those fancy orchestral ensembles while lyrically keeping to that Americana meets British folk troubadour feel that we all love. Refereeing tonight's bout will be One Trick Pony who could very well step into the Octagon at some point for a little elimination cage match action since they'll most likely be playing new songs off their upcoming record too.
So there you have it, the main event. Get ready to ru... BYOB.

Nice weekend. Thanks to those who somehow found out about our photo/"art" exhibit on Saturday (sneaky kids). How embarrassing to actually publicly show some of our crappy pieces in that room of real artists. In any case, we appreciate that no one said we sucked to our faces although we'll be back for the closing reception so hold that thought until then... On Sunday, we got back in town and learned of a friend that was in Friday's train collision. After giving a pint of our sleep-deprived yet hopefully disease-free platelets, we groggily headed for Terrabyte 3.0 at the Arboretum, which once again was a perfectly beautiful night of art, music, and hortiphilia. Low blood sugar combined with the melodious hypnosis that Tycho and Test Shot Starfish sent through our prefrontal cortex made for a good time to catch up on z's. A few hours later we were found spooning some Alstroemeria.
Back again for the Monday residencies, which we suppose might bring out the biggest crowds of the month. Elsewhere, Miss Derringer opens for IAMX at the El Rey... Tuesday, "Let's Independent" features our boy toy Tenlons Fort with Manhattan Murder Mystery and The Poor Excuses. The return of Baby Lemonade, Velouria, and The Black Watch at the Temple Bar. We're helping with two shows this week. Firstly, the Divisadero and Marvelous Toy release show at pehrspace on Friday, which we're co-presenting with Radio Free Silver Lake. Later on that night, Castledoor plays a late show at the Lyric Hyperion to celebrate their new video for "Dumpster Diving", which we got a sneak preview last week and we must say is quite good. Stay tuned for posts on these shows but, regardless, you should be planning this Friday accordingly.

What the hey...
Listen up for a little CGT vs Buzz Bands action tonight at 6pm...
Future Sounds gave some props to Tenlons Fort today. This new EP they speak of is absolutely miraculous. T Fort plays tonight with Aaron Embry and friends at Tangier. Last week, the Embry's did a beautiful version of T Fort's "Ghost on a Hill" that of course made us weep. The picture above is Tenlons strumming a Castledoor song at The Monolator house back in July. Incidentally, members of Castledoor were seen at last week's Tangier show. In other words, tonight is going to be effing amazing (plus, it's free)...
Speaking of Castledoor, be sure to pay attention to any bulletins they post about a wonderful show they have planned for next week.
Good, if not already dated, commentary on L.A.'s current music scene by the Guardian with a nice intro using Babcock's now-infamous hurtful words...
Finally listened to Acid Tongue all the way through. What do you think? Title track and "Fernando" stand out. We'll be stopping by Amoeba tonight to of course see the Red Heads as well as to pick up the new Mitch Hedberg and Ettes records...
Interesting write-up on the Hotel Cafe by the LA Times although we wouldn't necessarily call it a "listening room" unless you like it when industry people talk over your favorite band while waiting for the band they're jockeying to sign to hit the stage...
Local rising singer-songwriter Lucy Schwartz, who we might have caught do a series of private showcases last year for labels, is the featured artist on the soundtrack for The Women, starring Meg Ryan, Bette Midler, Candice Bergen, Annette Bening, Jada Pinkett Smith, Eva Mendes, and Debra Messing. The soundtrack (sup'd by Douridas) came out this week and features Schwartz's tracks "Count on Me" (produced by Mitchell Froom) and "Beautiful" (produced by Larry Klein and Walter Becker). Not bad for recent high school graduate...
We doubt this album will neither make anyone "happy" or be considered even remotely "fun"...
How can we be #16 on this list? We invented MySpace and speed dating for the love of gosh...
She probably wouldn't remember dancing with us to Bright Eyes at the Wiltern a few years ago, but we'll still mention that tickets for Irish lass Lisa Hannigan's show at g'net on 10/30 is now available through the venue or through Lisa's site. Her long-awaited debut album Sea Sew (out next week) is just as lovely as you might have hoped. Download "Lille" here...

Otik Records, the South Bay-bred label that has brought you the likes of E>K>U>K, The Voyeurs, and Vaudeville are making quite a bit of noise with their bi-weekly nights at Saint Rocke down in Hermosa Beach. Formerly known as the Pitcher House, Saint Rocke is now a swanky joint that has already hosted the likes of The BellRays, The Bravery, and Donavon Frankenreiter. Otik Records' nights have been just as good with local favorites HoneyHoney, The Monolators, The Sweet Hurt, ExitMusic, and others all getting some South Bay love. This week, they've put together another fantastic lineup and we're just hopping on for the ride.

Well, that was an eventful weekend. We stopped by 6th St. for a great benefit show on Friday. Proceeds of the show went to Free Arts for Abused Children and what a great event it was going to be. Sharif and Devendra were spinning records when we arrived then as WEAVE! was a few minutes into their set the show got shut down by men in uniform. People quickly dispersed but unfortunately, according to LA Record, that's not where it ended. A donation account has been set up in Dave's behalf. If you've ever enjoyed a night at Dave's warehouse, you should be giving a buck or two right about now... Despite not really being up for F Yeah-ing it this year, we did stop by to see some friends Anavan, Monotonix, Jonah Ray, URTC, 60-Watt Kid, and a few others. We took a few pics of the back of people's heads if you're interested... Later on that night, we hopped on over to pehrspace for Divisadero. We'll be co-presenting their CD release show at pehrspace on 9/19 with Radio Free Silver Lake. Yay... Also, congrats to Monsters Are Waiting on the release of their new EP. We couldn't make it over yonder for the show on Friday but boxViolet has a nice mention.
