Los Angeles Loves... A Night at Lot 1
Los Angeles Loves... A Night at Lot 1
We haven't presented a show with a lineup of our own since our last night at Lot 1 back in February (which was one of our most favorite shows) but on Sunday that all changes as we head back to the lovely little cafe in Echo Park for an intimate affair with a few of our favorites.

We caught White Dove at the Bootleg last month shortly after the band subtly announced via email list their name change from the ominous Monster to its new more benevolent one. And, oh dear, were we stunned. Even when we declared our love for them way back in 2006 we might have been a bit overzealous (us, overzealous?), but with these new songs we can hardly contain ourselves. Still immersed in the beautiful slumber of melancholic lo-fi rock, the band has reinvigorated their sound with rich harmonies and intricate arrangements. In other words, old fans of Monster are gonna shit their pants for this new band.

In 2011, Northern California was our second home as we traveled up to the Bay Area a ridiculous number of times for business trips (29), for weddings (6), and of course for new bands (∞). Out of the dozen or so new bands we admired, by far, our most favorite was the lovely Doe Eye. We'd go as far as declaring that Doe Eye, aka Maryam Qudus, as perhaps the next big band out of San Francisco, but before that she'll be performing at this weekend's Make Music Pasadena (Crème de la Crepe, 8pm) and our little show on Sunday. Don't think that declarations like that should be making her nervous, not when Billboard Magazine has already proclaimed her as not just the next big thing out of SF but the future star of the entire West Coast. Believe it.

Not much can be said about the newly/temporarily formed Devours except that they feature the two cutest members of Heller Keller and Moses Campbell and both of them have repeatedly declined our advances for years. As disappointing as the latter may be, they have agreed to perform on Sunday to play a few songs as long as we keep the court-ordered 100-yard distance from them. Dammit. Come early to see these girls perform songs a thousand times less violent than their respective other bands.

It's a long summer full of concerts, festivals, and tons of other activities so we understand if you're busy or under a tight budget. If you can't do the $3-$5 sliding scale donation just come by and get a bite/drink at the cafe and support these bands with your attentive ears and lovely smiles. We love you.
