Well, it's the first of 365 days of 2011 today and there is no better way we'd like to start the year than to spend the evening with some of our favorite lady friends.
The Sweet Hurt has been off galavanting with a some of the scene's most famous faces for the last few years but somehow she managed to produce one of the prettiest indie folk records of 2010 with her self-titled album (out now). We've known Ms. Hurt for going on ten years now and we're always honored that she finds the time to return to our little shows. She'll be an la-underground favorite forever (or whenever the Mayan calendar ends, whichever comes first).
"There once was a little girl named Ema..." That's how we're going to start every bedtime story to our grandkids one day. Each story will be different but all will end with a happy ending. An ending with Ema singing her charming little songs and giggling until she falls asleep. We're going to miss this girl too much. [Download all her EP's here for flippin' free.]
So new they were named just a few days ago, we're proud to present the debut of Pageants. You know her. You love her. She's the one all the indie boys were falling in love with while Mr. Buffalo was blowing minds with 10-minute guitar solos. She's the next indie rock goddess out of Los Angeles and you all effing know it. She's Pageants and she's just my type.
Given the times of the year we've seen The Wild Reeds, the band seemingly only plays around town when all three lovely ladies are back from university. So, incidentally, they've been playing pretty much non-stop during this holiday break and it would behoove you to put your best foot forward and arrive early for the next big folk trio out of Los Angeles. Yes, fans of The Haden Triplets, Chapin Sisters, Living Sisters, and all the rest of 'em... These are three of the prettiest voices we've ever heard and you should get their new album Songs for the Morning, Afternoon, and Evening right this second (out now on iTunes, CD out soon).
This is the best lineup of 2011. It's all downhill from here.
