Los Angeles Loves... A Black Christmas

Los Angeles Loves... A Black Christmas
'Tis the season for giving and we couldn't think of a better way to do so than to "present" a night of music with three of our favorite bands at one of L.A.'s most cherished venues Three Clubs on one of the most beloved weeklies Marathon Live (hosted by the amazing Brandon McCulloch). Is that enough superlatives for you? Anyway, don't worry so much about our slightly sinister theme to the evening. We just couldn't think of anything clever for a December night of music with two bands with "Black" in their names. But if it boats your float, feel free to get in whatever black pagan orale that fancies you and we'll dance and feast to the Son of Isis like days of old.

We picked our five favorite new bands of the year back in like May and that list hasn't changed. Black Flamingo and Black Jesus are two of them (incidentally, a third also has "Black" in their name). We've seen them both enough times this year to perhaps warrant much bigger accolades than just favorite new band honors, but since no one takes best-of lists seriously anymore, we'll simply just say that we absolutely love these bands. Black Flamingo's gorgeous gothereal dreampop conjures the spirits of Dead Can Dance, Cocteau Twins, and This Mortal Coil with beautiful choral motifs and lovely glistening rhythms. Meanwhile, Black Jesus' deeply soulful often breathtakingly melancholic delivery drifts into Tom Waits/Nick Cave territory with a bit of Roy Orbison sense of finesse. Both bands are two of the best Los Angeles has to offer right now.

Surely deserving of their own paragraph, The Shivers are undoubtedly one of thee best bands in NY. Their shows are very often damn near religious experiences for their hardcore fans. And it's easy to see why with songs like the devastatingly beautiful "L.I.E." (a signature fan favorite) crushing hearts left and right. They're in town briefly finishing up their new album and we couldn't be more honored to have them for this little show. And we should repeat that The Shivers/Black Jesus show at the Hotel Cafe back in July was one of our favorite shows of the entire year. If you were there, you know why. If you weren't there you must see them together again on Wednesday (Black Jesus will be their backing band).

Happy Holidays everyone. We love you.
