Los Angeles Needs... A Friday Update

Los Angeles Needs... A Friday Update
So another year of Coachella has come around and the inevitable divide of those who are attending versus those cannot afford to attend versus those who have become bitter about the event and have vowed never to step near Indio again versus those who have more important things to do this weekend. And even if you fall under some other category, this weekend is filled with plenty of pro-chella/no-chella events for everybody to enjoy. Here are just the highlights...

Tonight, No-Chella is probably the best alternative for those not going to the desert or for those needing a detour prior to heading to the desert. Just be sure you know someone in one of the bands or Pomona College that can get you in because it's only for students and we hear it might be pretty strict on that rule. If you're smart and jump the fence, you'll get to see The Happy Hollows, Avi Buffalo, Tijuana Panthers, Moses Campbell, and a slew of other great locals play for free... A little closer to home, Autolux plays the Bootleg. Joseph Arthur continues his residency at The Stronghold. Andy Clockwise and others at the Hotel Cafe. Les Blanks continue their residency at Casey's. Moses Campbell and friends at The Smell. Repeater, Telomere Repair, Greater California, Bella Novela, and others at Alex's. Former Ghosts, Whitman, Bestial Mouths, and others at Sync. Jonah Ray hosts another Meltdown. Sarah Silverman at g'net. Black Apples, Dirt Dress, and others open for Mark Sultan. And be sure to listen up for Featherbeard on Demolisten.

Saturday is Record Store Day and most local shops are in on it with Amoeba presenting Smashing Pumpkins at Space 15 Twenty; Male Bonding, Dum Dum Girls, The One AM Radio, and others at Origami; Keith Morris, Jeff Caxide (ISIS), Larry Herwig (Pelican), and others DJing at Vacation; and Rhettmatic, (with Iriscience, and Chali 2na), Mr. Chock, C-Minus, and others at Fat Beats. And all of them are having huge sales so if you've been waiting to buy the new We Are the World, Captain Ahab, and Patrick Park records (and you should because they're three of the best records of the year) this is the day to do it... Elsewhere Saturday, Daedelus returns to The Broad Stage for another performance of Wagner's Ring Cycle. Radar Brothers, Timonium, NOPAL, and Young Hunting at Echo Curio. Kid Infinity, Okie Dokie, and Rough Kids do Nomad. SISU, Katie the Pest, and Maraca Mouths at pehrspace. Cobalt Cranes, AM, The Light Rays, and Blue Red Tape at Silver Factory Studios. Bestial Mouths, Trudgers, Chum Out, and others at Sync. Rocket at T's. The Paul F. Tompkins Show at g'net. The Monthlies, John Gold, Azalia Snail, Brandon McCulloch, boxviolet, and many others play songs at the Amphiyard. And So Many Wizards, Rademacher, The Crystelles, and others at The Smell.

Sunday, it's the return of Radio Free Silver Lake's "Let's Independent" at El Cid with The Californian, Big Whup, and WALK. Elsewhere, Dee Dee from Dum Dum Girls aka Kristin Gundred plays a rare solo show at Echo Curio with another rare solo performance from Ms. Nite Jewel aka Ramona Gonzalez. Meiko, Angie Mattson, and others at Saint Rocke (which will be broadcast live). WEAVE! and Love Grenades open for Love Is All at The Echo. Dunes, PROTECTME, and others open for Male Bonding at The Smell. Parade of Lights takes a break from recording in Vegas for a trip back home at Spaceland. Boris Smile and others at Dig In. Another dose of "I Love L.A." 420 Celebration at The Airliner. And It's Casual back at the Dragonfly.

Happy birthdays this weekend to the wonderful Leslie Stevens (Leslie and the Badgers), Lukas Haas, Amy Cooper (Naked Hearts), Maynard James Keenan, and Monet Mazur.

Les Blanks - "Reverie"

Katie the Pest - "Tropic Of Cancer"

Rademacher - "Rocketship"
