We normally don't say much about the shows we help out with (before or after the show) but we really must give a warm round of applause to everyone involved with Tuesday's show at the Bootleg. The Fold put together one of the best lineups of the year at one of the best newly-renovated venues of the year all for the very affordable price of 131 pesos. Plus, with local media giant KCRW presenting the show and the accessibility to 18-and-over fans (who seemed to take up much of the front of the stage) what you have is a night predestined for greatness. Thanks to the handful of people who come to this site for coming out and to The Fold for having us tag along.
Given the amount of pro bloggers that were in attendance that evening, we probably won't have much to add to what happened that night but we will say that...
* In between quite a few good original folk tunes (especially "Flyrock Blues" and "It's You"), Daniel Martin Moore did a cover of The Carter Family's "Storms Are on the Ocean," which given our long-standing love for all things Carter, automatically made him tops in our book. He's touring the West Coast at the moment. It would be in your best interest to see him if you can.
* Ferraby Lionheart, playing his first L.A. show in a year, debuted many new songs that will be on his new record out in 2010. His new band included a drummer he met the day before the show. And if you're smart you'll be at Spaceland on Sunday 11/15 for another dose of Lionheart the Great.
* Eleni Mandell (backed by the amazing duo of Jeremy Drake on guitar and Ryan Feves on upright) played probably the best set of music of the entire night. She also had one particular somber moment reflecting on the good feeling of the evening as the reason why she continues to do music. She then closed with "Nickel Plated Man," a song that still holds up some ten years after we first heard her sing it opening for Jon Brion at Largo. Ms. Eleni and her all-star jazz combo returns to the Bootleg for a couple of early Thursday night sets beginning 11/12.
* Inara George and longtime musical partner Mike Andrews played a wonderfully casual set of new and old songs. You know, she's always written great music and her voice is as lovely as ever but the best thing about Ms. Inara is that she's as down-to-earth as she's always been. Never taking herself too seriously. Making fun of herself any chance she gets. And still able to chat with nervous fans after shows as if she were just any other girl in the room. That's why everyone loves Inara. And, yes, she officially announced that she's preggers with her first child so playing shows might be significantly decreased in the next few years. At least we'll have this one to treasure for a long while.
Thanks again everyone for coming out. That was the last show we have scheduled for the year and it was a good one.

Tonight's lineup at the Bootleg brings a tear to our eye. It's a lineup that takes us back some ten years ago when Ms. Inara George was playing indie rock shows with the much-beloved Lode and later Merrick; Ms. Eleni Mandell was garnering "next big thing" buzz every time she'd open those Fridays at Largo for Jon Brion; and Mr. Ferraby Lionheart was frontman to one of the most under-appreciated power pop bands of our scene in Telecast. Of course, all three have gone on to become three of L.A.'s most cherished solo artists so having them together for one night in the very intimate setting of the Bootleg Theater makes this a must-go-to event (as emphasized by the bold lettering, something we rarely do). All will surely be performing new songs off recent and upcoming records. And, as a bonus, Daniel Martin Moore is coming all the way out from the blue hills of Kentucky to open up the evening.
If would be a tragedy to miss this show.

Quick recap of the week... Monday residency launches were quite good and well-attended. You'd best be going out to a few this month if you can. The lineups are all stacked top to bottom... Congrats to Brandon McCulloch and the Deadbirds (pictured above) on their Wild Imagine record release on Wednesday. We were gigantic fans of Silver back in the day so finally seeing The Deadbirds put some new music out is a long time coming. Be sure to pick up the album on CD Baby or wherever you might see it on a shelf somewhere... Thursday, was Señor Avi Buffalo's birthday and he celebrated the night with a show with friends and family at The Echo. The night was also a bit of a release party for their new 7" on Sub Pop. Thanks to everyone for coming out on Saturday for our little Halloween get-together. Eliza Rickman with string quartet was more lovely than we have ever seen her. Asa Ransom (pictured above) proved again they're destined for bigger stages very soon. boxViolet unveiled their new lightshow and they also secretly handed us some new demos that we have been playing all weekend (good lord). And The Blind were also a pleasant surprise (thanks Matthew Teardrop!). Be sure to see these bands whenever you get a chance. And thanks to everyone at pehrspace for hosting. Our next show we're helping with is 11/10 at the Bootleg with Inara George, Eleni Mandell, Ferraby Lionheart, and Daniel Martin Moore. We'll be doing a ticket giveaway for the show this week. Meaning, it's been so long since we've done a ticket giveaway we need a few days to read through the ticket giveaway instruction manual.
