Congrats to Elaine Layabout on the inaugural "Hella Hipster Hoedown" on Friday at pehrspace. A big crowd showed up for some good tunes, good people and some good ol' southern hospitality (homemade goodies will always get a thumbs up from us). Unfortunately we didn't stick around to see if there was any late night square dancing (we had to bail -- haha, get it?) but we look forward to more Hoedowns in the near future... Saturday, we went to a few Grammy-related events that were booked several months ago so we had an excuse for missing out on Fol Chen's release show although we doubt we would have made it through the doors (apparently it was sold out and then some)... Sunday, caught an early Alex & Sam set at Home and then trotted down the street to Spaceland for a 90's flashback lineup with Suki Ewers, Dallas Don, Patria Jacobs, and friends. While it's a common occurrence to see these lovelies at any given night at Taix, it's always nice to have them back at the venue they all once ruled. Lutefisk still remains to be one of the best bands ever to come out of Los Angeles so seeing Dallas Don in any capacity is always an honor. Introducing the hipshaker "L.A. Party," Don said he wrote the song after seeing The Happy Hollows (LA Record cover stars) at Sunset Junction last year and we couldn't help but fantasize a show with Lutefisk and Happy Hollows on the same night. Someone please make this happen. Later Sunday, one of the must-go's of the month was at L'KEG. Mikki and the Mauses is Anthony Anzalone's new band and if for some reason you've forgotten how good The Mean Reds were you might want to check this new band out. We caught part of their debut show last October (two years removed from The Mean Reds' historic last show at Fais Do Do on Halloween 2005) and Anzalone is still an onstage force. We were also excited to catch Non+ (Dirty Preston's new punk band), Slow Trains (from San Francisco), and the comedy genius of Erik Charles Nielsen (erratic, self-hating and very funny).
Monday residencies were very crowded last week and we expect more of the same. Get there early for all the great bands. Also, L.A. Record issue party (with the aforementioned Happy Hollows cover) at Cha Cha with DJ sets by the Hollows. Golden State at Viper. Flying Lotus at Mad Mondays. And Big Digits, Birth!, Showgirls, and others at Carnage... Tuesday, Dulli & Lanegan at the Troubadour. The Parson Red Heads, Light FM, The Spires, and The French Semester at The Echo. The Meeting Places and others at The Prospector. Cat Power begins two nights at the Avalon. Faav, IE, Baseck, and others at Echo Curio. And Miranda Lee Richards and boxViolet continue their respective Tuesday residencies... Wednesday, Orenda Fink makes her L.A. solo debut as an L.A. resident at The Bordello. Anya Marina does an in-store at Fingerprints. Spirit Vine, Electric Children, Rocking Horse People, and others at Mr. T's Bowl. The Karabal Nightlife, Nightfur, and C-Horse at Three Clubs. Customer Service, Flynn Adams, and others at LET. And Aushua continues their Wednesday residency at the Knitting Factory...
Thursday, a night so busy that it deserves its own paragraph... Lemon Sun finally celebrates the release of their new album Run with the Faithless (get it iTunes). Meanwhile Anya Marina celebrates the release of her new album Slow & Steady Seduction: Phase II at the Hotel Cafe. Heart Records launch party with a monster lineup of The Happy Hollows, The Movies, Crooked Cowboy & The Freshwater Indians, Anni Rossi, Jillian Hank Leigh, and Whitman at The Echo. The Airborne Toxic Event, The Henry Clay People, and Rademacher play a sold-out Music Box. The Binges at Amoeba. Cola Cola Band, Shiloe, The Monthlies, and Writer at The Scene. Two social media mixer/mashups Twiistup 5 and Twestival L.A. And you might be able to get home to catch Erin McCarley on the Tonight Show.
We're also helping with a Friday the 13th show this week. Should be fun but no one ever reads this far down so we probably won't see you. It's cool.
