Very good week of shows. Wednesday, we stopped by the SLL to get another taste of the glorious sounds of Glasser (seen above). We're still not sure if the duo is a side project of Big Search or if Big Search is a side project of Glasser, but they're both great. And this Glasser EP has been whetting our appetite for too long -- supposedly a full-length is coming soon. Also, we must say how pleased we were to see Tartufi again. Watch out for this melodic prog duo from San Francisco. They come down often and we're all the better for it... On Thursday, we headed for The Bordello and didn't move an inch (yes, no club hopping on this night) for the lineup of Pilar Díaz, Wait.Think.Fast., and La Santa Cecilia. All three bands released records that were on our "best of 2008" list so to have them together on the same lineup made it the show of the week. Great music and big crowd made it an easy excuse to stay out of the rain and keep dancing until the late night hour.
Tonight, The Bird and the Bee celebrate the release of their new album Ray Guns Are Not Just the Future at the Natural History Museum. The Idyllists celebrate the release of their new record The Long Hours Between Sunset & Morning at the Hotel Cafe (Angela Correa and Birdie Busch open the night with a special set). Mika Miko and The Underground Railroad to Candyland open for Fucked Up at the Echo. Upground opens for Grammy nominees Grupo Fantastma at the Knitting Factory. NOFX at the Music Box. "First Fridays" is back at T's with Seasons, Les Blanks, The French Semester, Spirit Vine, and The Van Pelts. Elaine Layabout presents "Hella Hipster Hoedown" at pehrspace with My Pet Saddle, Death to Anders, Divisadero, and Dirt Dress. Pizza!, Manhattan Murder Mystery, Kid Infinity, and others at Bow & Sparrow. Moses Campbell, God Equals Genocide and others at The Smell. Repeater, War Tapes, The Hundred Days, and others at Downtown 81. Avi Buffalo and others at The Que Sera. And Oliver Future, Gliss, and Rami Dearest at Spaceland (with a special after party downtown). Also, Kid Infinity is tonight's guest on "Demolisten" and Aussies Sam Sparro tapes a performance on Jimmy Kimmel and Ben Lee appears on the Tonight Show.
On Saturday, Fol Chen celebrates the release of their new album Part I: John Shade, Your Fortune's Made at pehrspace with Kárin Tatoyan and Avi Buffalo. The Tyde at The Que Sera. Chelsea Girls at the Roxy. Mike Stinson and Frank Fairfield open for the one and only Charlie Louvin. Jim Hanft and Lisa Donnelly and others at the Hotel Cafe. And Homeslice supergroup at Home in Silverlake.
Sunday, check out an early show at Home with Alex & Sam. Suki Ewers, Dallas Don and other friends gather at Spaceland. Mos Def does a last-minute after-Grammy show at the House of Blues with very special guests. Mikki and the Mauses and others at L'KEG. Hungry Ghost and Sad Horse at PTP. And, oh yeah, those things called The Grammys are being given out somewhere downtown (so you might want to avoid that part of town).
