It came and went... Great residencies galore around town beginning, of course, with Inara George who enthralled us all with her stay at the Echo -- she also did a few nights at Theatricum Botanica. Be sure to catch Inara on tour with Idlewild. El Rey Theatre details posted on the Pimp... Tangier was the place to be on Tuesdays. Richard Swift is going to be gigantic. But that's pretty obvious. Also, too obvious is the pending world domination of Silversun Pickups, as witnessed every Wednesday at Spaceland by the biggest crowds they've ever had. Their second week was undoubtedly the highlight of the month. And, no, that guy who flailed around like it was a Grateful Dead concert every week wasn't us... Cat Hair Ensemble began their third Thursday monthly at Mr. T's Bowl with a brilliant lineup of Artichoke and the debut of The Rice Club. I don't think the Ensemble or Artichoke ever sounded better, but I must say the return of Ben Boyer (aka Rice Club) was a beautiful thing. Boyer was one half of the utterly briliant Mash Notes, a band very familiar to Mr. T's old schoolers or the first three fans of Rilo Kiley. Anyway, the new stuff is same ol' witty Boyer with songs that illegal file-sharers would even pay for. Artichoke, by the way, moves their residency from first Fridays to second Fridays at the Bowl... I still very much enjoy seeing Justin Clayton every Monday at Molly Malone's, especially with Dead Rock West in action... Meanwhile, 50 Cent Haircut continued their long-running "Home Grown" series at the Farmer's Market with special guests Les Shelleys... There were other residency nights (Lion Fever, Satisfaction, Sam Winch), but August is a peak tourist month and I was trying to conserve precious gasoline droplets this month (i.e. I'm lazy).

Not to pick nits, but Ben was actually 1/3 of The Mash Notes. The other two guys are doing interesting stuff as well. Guitarist Dave Roche now lives in Portland and has published a brilliant book on the perils of substitute teaching (http://www.microcosmpublishing.com/catalog/books/1010/). Bassist Alfred Weisberg-Roberts has been putting out electronic albums under the name Daedelus (check out his track "A Mash Note" on an early Dublab comp). But man, you're right...it's great to have Ben and his songs back. Viva Rice Cub!
