Looner Tunes

Looner is the cosmic duo of Zoë and Angel Roché, a loopy pair that combines sequencers and looped beatboxing with indie rock. It almost works. Musically, there are nice touches of humming guitar overlapping cleverly interlaced looped and live percussion. And Zoë and Angela have good voices with hers lying somewhere in between Amy Lee and Anna Waronker (she actually kind of looks like Anna), but sometimes the lyrics fail them a bit. Anyway, they're a good band so don't let me detract from their live shows (I've seen them pretty much every time they've played in town), which are pretty impressive and much more indicative of where they're headed than either of their EPs. Actually, they were so impressive that after seeing them live, Ziggy Marley handpicked them for last year's Roots Rock Reggae Festival. Not bad for an unsigned band with only a handful of songs recorded... Next show is at the Viper Room on 2/20.
