Los Angeles Loves... A Very Strange Halloween

Los Angeles Loves... A Very Strange Halloween
Well, here we are again. Halloween. Our least favorite holiday and we still can't keep ourselves from doing shows on this night. Yes, this is our fourth straight Halloween-ish show and for the fourth straight year we will not be showing any signs of Halloween spirit so if you were wondering if you'd be seeing us in some tired Spartan costume you can forget it. C'mon people, 300 came out like four years ago and you know we don't need no prosthetic chest piece to mimic our taco ten-pack. Much more importantly, we've invited three of our favorite bands we've seen this year. And by "seen this year" we're talking, stalking...

As most Angelenos probably know by now, Big Black Delta is the latest project of Mellowdrone mastermind Jonathan Bates. Their debut show was only back in August but every show we've seen has been just a gorgeous display of sonic ferocity -- even their technically-marred show last week was better than most performances we've seen this entire year. Given that Bates has already been through 10+ years of "Bands to Watch" whoop-whooping with Mellowdrone, he's probably not interested in hearing all the hype on the band. So we'll just say that under no circumstances should you see this band if you have shitty taste in music.

We've been semi-secretly wooing Black Jesus for much of 2010. Their show at 2HeadedHorse back in February was a revelation. Their shows at Echo Curio over the summer were among the best we've seen at the venue -- ever. And that show at the Hotel Cafe in July, well, if you were smart enough to be at that show then you already know how utterly brilliant that entire night was. The band features members of The Janks, Gangi, and other more established local acts but they might want to re-prioritize this one to the top of the food chain because this is undoubtedly better than most anything currently on anyone's SoundCloud playlist.

Roughed Up Folk played our little Echo Curio show back in July and they completely crushed that opening slot. Why they've even agreed to do this show and graciously take yet another opening slot is beyond us. I mean, does this band even know how good they are? Do they even realize they easily could be headlining theater-sized venues if they stopped slumming it at la-underground shows? And will they ever understand how much we love them? Probably not. They're great album Must Be the Moonlight was released earlier this year and they're already working on the next one. Begin excitement now.

On a sidenote, we all know Halloween is kind of a son-of-a-bitch in Los Angeles so let's keep it cool, be safe, and for the love of gosh let's all try to not make such a mess of the 101 this time.

We love you.
